[comp.sys.apple2] HD & GS/OS woes...

chaosboss@pro-lep.cts.comple (07/11/90)

I recently purchased a Seagate 296n & the new Apple DMA SCSI card. I've done
all the formatting in the world <a little hyperbole never hurt anyone> yet I
can't get GS/OS to recognize more than one partition after a restart/reboot.
ProDOS 8 recognizes 2 32Mb volumes <even after a reboot> but as soo as I go to
the finder, it's all gone. <grrr>
I've even gone so far as to use it on a Mac SE and it works *fine*.
Is there something I should know about GS/OS? I've installed the drivers and
such with the disk that came with the SCSI card. <the old drivers won't
recognize the new card> BTW, this HD did the same thing on another friends
machine with an older model Apple SCSI card, same result.
System specs:
standard "Woz" GS
Datalink 2400 <slot 2>
Apple DMA SCSI card<slot 6>
RAMKeeper <mem slot>
GS RAM+ (w/6Mb) <front of RAMkeeper>
oh yeah, don't forget the Apple 3.5 drive on the smartport...:)

Argh...
Thanks in advance for any help,
Glenn Copeland

I recall not being able to format drives over 64MB with the Apple system
software. I ended up using the Chinook SCSI utilities (which don't work
with the DMA SCSI card, alas) to partition my ST296N. (16MB,32MB,32MB)

There are some SCSI utilities posted in various information services such
as America Onlie and Genie that might do the trick. Once you get the drive
formatted and partitioned, it definitely does work with GS/OS 5.0.[23] and
the DMA SCSI card. ProDOS-8 will only see the first two partitions, however.

I hope you used the Installer to install the GS/OS drivers etc. Simply
copying them doesn't seem to work.

I also have an ST-296N, and your problem is very simple. Get out your
System.Tools disk that came with your System 5.0.2. Run Advanced Disk
Utilities (forgot the actual name of the file... well you should be able to
find it easy enough). Select your HD and select partitions... it's pretty
straight forward from there on.

Oh, I'm getting the RAMfast card for mine from LRO $197. It should be really
kicking once I get it.

Well, hope that helps.
