[comp.sys.apple2] PCT & File Transfers

lhaider@pro-beagle.cts.com (Laer Haider) (07/14/90)

I'm having trouble getting the PCTransporter to do file transfers. It seems
that the PCT can't effectively handle disk access while downloading files.
ZModem is the only protocol that can handle downloading, but at a 50% error
and resend rate. Is there a way to prevent this? Is this like everyone
else's PCT? My system is set up as follows:

ROM 01 Apple IIgs with...
4.25 MB RAM
        800K RAM Disk
105 MB SCSI Hard Drive
Apple High Speed SCSI Interface in Slot 7
PCTransporter w/ 768K in Slot 6
        Version 2.0 of PCT software
        5.25" 360K MFM Floppy Drive
        3.5" 720K MFM Floppy Drive
1 Apple 3.5 Drive
1 Apple 5.25 Drive
1 Mitac 5.25" 140K FD

Running on System Software 5.0.2. (any more rumors on V6.0?)

Any help will be appreciated.

It sounds to me that you are trying to download on the IBM-compatible
side of your computer, instead of the Apple side.

The easiest way (at least for me) is to download IBM files using Proterm
(or your favorite Apple II term program), in the normal manner.

Then go over to the PCT side, and select "Transfer" (a utility that's on one
of those AE disks). Then move them over to the portion of your hard drive
that you've partitioned for your PCT transporter.

I've discovered that using an IBM term program drops characters at 2400 baud,
and since I have 9600, I don't bother with it on the IBM side.

Mine works just fine. There are a couple things you could look into:

* Check your version of ZMODEM. Ideally, you should have a protocol that
will receive a lot of the file to RAM and _then_ write it out to the
disk, so you may get an error on the block it was sending during the
write, but that should only occur every 500 blocks or so.

* Check your modem settings in the control panel. What's happening is that
the // is handling all I/O, including the modem and disk, and it has to
turn off interrupts to do disk access. It does work with me, however.
You didn't mention the speed of your modem. Some modems have buffers, so
they can recieve several characters while the computer is doing other stuff
and you can grab them all when the disk access is done. At 9600 baud, the
number of characters recieved might be too many.

Anyway, I'm recieving at 2400 baud to an AppleDisk 3.5 from a DataLink Express
through the IIgs modem port with no problems using Telix. I think your best
bet is the first option.

What term software are you using? I've used Procomm, MS-Works, kermit, and
Telix 3.11. They all work fine on my PCT with every protocal. How much space
is left on the disk you're downloading to? Which disk are you downloading
to? Is it the RAMdisk? If so, have you formatted the RAMdisk for ms-dos?
Are you're phone lines clean? I can't think of any other reason that
downloads wouldn't work, but I'm sure there could be more reasons.

I have a PCT/768k
-one apple 3.5" drive (use as ms-dos 720k drive when using PCT)
-2 AE 5.25" 360k drives
-2 Apple 5.25" disk ][ drives
-PCT System disk ver. 1.30, Release 1.2

I'd bet more than anything, that it's your term software. Try calling a BBS
>From Apple mode and download Telix (it's about the best term package), then
trnsfer from ProDOS to MS-DOS. You'll more than likely have to de-arc it or
unzip it, so be sure you have a copy of either of those. If all alse fails,
call AE tech support, if you can ever get through.
hope this helps.
