It was suggested to me that reconfiguring my serial ports might help with the problems I've been having, since apparently the settings get lost after a few years or due to some random events. I'd always thought that the serial port configuration was lost when the power was shut off. Anyway I did as suggested and the only change I made was to change the modem from 300 baud (I'd never changed that since I got the //c, but have been using 1200 and 2400 baud modems anyway) and it apparently did the trick (pending some heavy-use tests). So anyway, are the settings stored permanently somehow? If so, how could they be erased? Excessive heat, brief power loss, voltage fluctuation on the serial lines?

The default serial port FIRMWARE settings are always lost when the power is
turned off, but are not affected by an OA-control-reset. However, most
terminal programs do not use the firmware, and thus the default settings are
irrelevant for them.
