Any suggestions..how can you get a 3.5 to use a headcleaner...it will normally scan for maybe 1/2 a second.....not enough time by a long shot... I'm talking about the cleaning disks and such, BTW... TSEMM@ALASKA.BITNET TSEMM@Acad3.fai.alaska.edu

Tell Copy II+ to bitcopy the disk, or try to read it using diversi-cache. That should leave it on long enough. Any other methods? 3.5 bitcopy doesn't work on a //c and I don't think diversi-cache does either. I know there was a simple little program to run slot 6, drive 2 for headcleaning (rwts and dos 3.3, probably). And I actually wrote a program for dos 3.3 and rwts that would run the disk and move the head between tracks 0, 17, and 34 and back again as you pressed a key (I used this for checking out a couple of old drives, and also for head cleaning). But I don't think that'll work with a unidisk :-)

It might be different on your //c, but on the gs, it scans for 1/2 second or so only if there is no disk in the drive. If there is a disk that it is unable to read from (such as a blank disk or a cleaning disk), it keeps trying for about 5-10 seconds. In-Reply-To: message from TSEMM@ALASKA.BITNET Sure do. I can't take the credit for this idea, though. A friend of mine told me and I don't know how he came upon it. Boot up Copy II Plus, put the headcleaning disk in, and choose "Catalog Disk." That sucker'll run for about 15 seconds trying to read the disk. You can do it a second time as I think most headcleaners recommend 30 second cleanings. Also works for 5.25" disks, BTW... Also, I know that you can copy non-protected 3.5 disks on the //c by using copyII + in "COPY-DISK" mode rather than bit- copy. I don't have any non-formatted disks just now ( notice how you can format a blank disk but you can't truly blank a formatted disk) to see if it would read it like your cleaning disk. ******************************************************************** * * * bob church bchurch@oucsace.cs.ohiou.edu * * * * If economics isn't an "exact" science why do computers crash * * so much more often than the stock market? * * bc * ********************************************************************

In-Reply-To: message from ART100@psuvm.psu.edu > How do I get my 3.5 drive to spin for around 30 seconds so that a > disk drive cleaner gets a chance to work? [Or something to that effect.] Easy. From Applesoft: 10 ONERR GOTO 20 20 PRINT CHR$(4)"PREFIX ,S5,D1" Hit reset after 30 seconds (or dress up the above program with a loop counter).

In Reply To: bchurch@oucsace.cs.OHIOU.EDU (Bob Church) Can't really "blank" a formatted disk?? Pick up a decent strength magnet or electromagnet and let it and the disk talk to each other for a little while. Might not scramble "every" bit, but sure will do enough damage to make the computer =think= it's an unformatted disk... :-) Joseph F.
