[comp.sys.apple2] Bringing //c up to date

vnend@phoenix.Princeton.EDU (D. W. James) (08/03/90)

I picked up an older //c at a flea market lately (it was sitting there
looking at me with these wide soulful eye. If I hadn't bought it it
would have followed me home... :-) And then very quickly bought a
Unidisk 5.25 for it. Remembering from when I had one a few years
ago, I started calling around to see about getting the upgrade to the
rom so I could use the unidisk (which would just sit there and spin
otherwise.) I also wanted someone to make certain that it would work
with a third party modem (yes, it is that old...)

The first place said that the old MB swap to make it compatible wasn't
in effect anymore, the second said sure, bring it on down. We have to
ship it over to our shop in Phillidelphia, but it should be back in no
time.

That was a week and a half ago or so. First the shop called to tell
me that they needed the drive sent in as well (and then said that the
upgrade wasn't covered when I told them that it was a 5.25, claiming that
the //c would support *all* 5.25 Apple // drives!) I asked them about
the Modem problem and they at first didn't seem to have any idea what
I was talking about, then said that I needed to send them the modem!!!
(Which is hooked up the mac at the moment do my roommate can read news.)
They claimed that this was all at "Apple's request."

I'm about to give up on them. I've found another place (cosiderably
further away) that can swap in the MB with the Unidisk roms, for 35$
labor. A fourth place, fairly close by, says that their Apple //
expert is out on vacation.

Has anyone else gotten a run around like this? What avenues are out
there at this point to get an older //c working with the newer stuff?

One last, unrelated question. I've noticed that AE advertises their
3.5 inch drive in both Mac and Apple // mags., will it work with both?
(Having one of each, this would be nearly ideal, and well worth the
extra 50$.)

Thanks.

Coming home I drove into the wrong house and collided with a tree I don't have.

Yes. Any Apple (or compatible) 3.5" drive that works on one Apple computer,
whether it's a // or a Mac will work on any other Apple. The Mac 3.5"
external 800k drive is the EXACT same drive as the Apple ][GS 3.5" drive...
and Apple COmputer doesn't try to hide this, they actually advertise it.
The only way you would come up with compatibility problems is if it's a 3rd
party drive (AE) and it's not a very good drive, then it would probably have
problems on both Mac and the //'s.

I believe this dealer is correct - the motherboard upgrade for UniDisk
compatibility is only for the UniDisk 3.5, as the UniDisk 5.25 is just
the same as the standard //c external (except it can't be daisy-chained (?)).
Your problem with the drive not working could be either with the drive
or the computer (after all, why was it at a flea market? :-)

The AE 3.5" drive is an Apple 3.5 clone, not a UniDisk 3.5 clone. I don't
think that will work with any //c, except the //c+.

I don't think this is correct. Apple has made three distinct different
3.5" drives - the original Mac external, the UniDisk 3.5, and the Apple 3.5.

The Mac external only works with a UDC on an Apple II - nothing except
the Mac supports it directly.

The UniDisk 3.5 works with the new (upgraded motherboard) //c, and a //e
with a controller card. Technically it also works with a gs through the
SmartPort, but not very well.

The Apple 3.5 works on the gs SmartPort, the //e with a UDC, and on
newer (SE and above) Macs. It doesn't have a 6502 inside, unlike the
other two.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this is pretty much correct :-)
