[comp.sys.apple2] Shells

vortex@vpnet.chi.il.us (Jason J. Levit) (08/07/90)

I'm interested in getting a good Shell program for my IIgs. Here's
  what I'm looking for:

Something that's very powerful, and uses my IIgs well. Something
that is as close to UNIX as possible. Also, I want it to be public
  domain or shareware...

I've heard of Davex, ECP, and others...what do all of you recommened?

  Thanks...

I use ECP quite a bit and it does everything you mentioned. It's freeware (used
to be shareware) from Don Elton. It has all the regular features and suports:
batch files with inputs, wildcards, output redirection, if statements in batch
files, directory backtraceing (i.e. ../DIR.B ), EXE files, launch a file or set
prefix 0 by entering the file's name- for SYS, S16, BAS, BIN, BAT, EXE and DIR
, a wide range of commands and many more features.
[I have no conection with Don Elton, except as a happy user]

I've recommend Davex. I've been using Davex v1.23 for a while
and have no complaints. It looks a lot like UNIX - at least with
the standard aliases defined.

Davex-16 is available for the GS - I havent used it.

Last I heard, v1.27 was coming RSN. Dave?

Get Davex. You won't be sorry!

Whoops! Davex (or "Davex 8") is available, and it works with any Apple II
that can run ProDOS 8, including the GS.

Davex 16 is still an experiment. Someday it will probably be released,
but it's not available now.

Yes, that's still true. I really need to Duplicate myself so one of me
can stay fairly sane while the other duplicates disks and runs binscii
all the time.
