[comp.sys.apple2] Finder Quit question

dalel@servio.UUCP (Dale LaFountain) (08/15/90)

While moving my hd around yesterday, I became worried about how it gets parked.
I have a Quantum PowerDrive 105meg drive, which is intended for Mac (well, it
was) usage. The little manual for the Mac software stated that you should
always use the Quit option from the Finder because it parks your heads on
your hd for you. This is the only mention of parking in any of the books
which came with the drive.

So my question is: Does the GS Finder (5.02) Quit option actually park your
heads? My drive is so quiet that I can't tell if it's parking or just
closing some files (I'm not bragging here, folks, you really can't hear this
drive unless you put your ear up to the cooling vents).

If the Quit option DOESN'T park my heads, is there a generic program somewhere
that does this? I tried the one in SCSI Hacker, but it gives me some error
(like $2b or something).

I would really like to make sure my heads are parked before I let UPS ship
it back to LA for me. :| Those guys really know how to thrash equipment.

Thanks,
Dale

No, but it does shut down all the GS/OS drivers. If you have a loaded
driver for your hard drive, it could park your heads at shutdown time.

Do you mean that it 'could' park the heads, or 'would' park the heads? Or
maybe 'will' park the heads? I'm using the SCSI drivers that came with the
DMA SCSI card and utilities. Do those drivers support parking?

I meant "could," meaning it's possible for the driver to park your heads,
but I don't know of any actual drivers that do. Apple's SCSIHD.DRIVER
doesn't, since I believe Apple's hard drives park themselves automatically
while they're spinning down.

[More conversation about how no known SCSI drivers park heads, and the
Apple HD parks itself automatically ...]

And so I'm back to my original question: How does one park the heads on
one's hard drive? Does anyone know if the Quantum POWERDrive parks itself
automatically? I know that 'most drives made in the last three years park
at shutdown,' but I need a DEFINITE answer before I hand it over to UPS
next month. The accompanying manual for the drive was written for Mac users,
so is in baby-ese. It says to always quit from the (Mac) Finder,
because that is how it parks itself. Not much help. Please help, or I will
have to resort to calling the company, who will probably know much less
about the GS that I do.
