[comp.sys.apple2] Q: Orca's COMPRESS utility

bkahn@dg-rtp.dg.com (Bruce Kahn) (08/24/90)

Has anyone had any luck using the Orca Compress utility on 5.0.2?? Every
thing I try with it gives me a ProDOS access error...

Under 5.0.x, COMPRESS works only on volumes that *don't* have any files
open. On your boot disk, the *:System:System.Setup:Sys.Resources file
is always open. So boot up from a different disk when you want to
compress directories on your boot volume.

Mike Westerfield of the Byte Works is well aware of the situation. He
consider's GS/OS's refusal to do block writes to a volume with open
files to be a bug, and Apple considers it a feature. Keeping a floppy
handy to boot from when needed is a reasonable solution.
