Just a little note to give you Unix jocks a kick. I was wondering this am, since folks are always talking about how compatible the GS and Mac sound files are, just how compatible are they? I don't have a Mac or GS handy, but I do have a SPARCstation 1+. So what? Well, there is this program for the SPARC which converts a Mac sound file into a SPARC sound file. So, I tried it. I had a copy of Marcel's unbit program laying around. I had some sounds in Executioner format which were posted ages ago to comp.binaries.apple2 laying around. So, after reading the header of unbit.c (someone NEEDS to write some man pages for these utilities...) I deleted the appropriate text from one of the sounds (maybe someone will update unbit.c to ignore the leading info?). I then ran unbit file.exe > file.bqy . Then, using nulib, I extracted the file. Next, I ran the sound2sun program on that file. Then SunOS 4.1's raw2audio of the file. Finally, with trembling fingers (not out of anticipation - that was a lot of messing around and a number of fumbles) I typed play shallwe.au. Eureka! It worked just fine! So those sound files ARE quite similar. One request. If you have sound files in an archive some where, indicate what frequence, and perhaps volume?, that you used when you digitized. It makes conversion much easier. -- Larry W.
