[comp.sys.apple2] Diagnostics Program

ccrovac@yogi.ucdavis.edu (09/05/90)

I am looking for a very thorough diagnostics program for the Apple IIgs,
preferably concentrating on the memory aspects (ie: the expansion mem
slot). if someone can either post it to comp.binaries.apple2, or just
simple email me and tell me where I can ftp it from, it would be most
appreciated.

Also...what is fatal error 681? (email me on this one - no need for net
postings on this one)

Thanx in advance.

681 means that random memory is getting trashed -- there are several possible
causes:

1. Buggy software (especially the stuff you install in your system folder)
2. DMA incompatibilities (Transwarp? DMA SCSI? OctoRam? AE GS-RAM?)
3. Inadequate power supply (too many cards and an Apple supply)
4. bad RAM chips

What kind of ram card do you have?

Try the Apple II diagnostics, from Apple Computer. It serves as an
excellent diagnositc program for the IIgs, as well as for other Apple
IIs. It tests EVERYTHING, or just what you want.

Anyone from Apple - can we post it, or isn't that allowed?

Finally, note that I found one problem Apple II diagnostics COULDN'T
diagnose - About a month ago, I was working for a local Apple dealer at
a seminar for 70 teachers who were using brand new IIgs's (unpacking
them and testing them). On about 5 or 6 out of 10 machines, the serial
ports passed all of Apple's tests and still printed garbage when
connected to a real printer. And it was NOT the printer; we tried that.
