[comp.sys.apple2] Prosel 8.54 Backup/Restore Woes

paul@nuchat.UUCP (Paul Hutmacher) (09/11/90)

Recently I've had some really flaky problems that may or may not be
attributed to ProSel 16 v8.54's Backup routines. I'd like to share this
with y'all and see if anyone else has had any problems:

I backup my hard drive religiously every Saturday afternoon with ProSel's
routines for the IIgs. Sometimes, since I do weird things to my system I
like to make sure I've got a good backup lying around in case I trash
something. Well, this Sunday I did and had to restore my entire first
partition from the backup made the day before.

For some reason I had over fifty errors, one of them being a file called
PT.MACROS (the one file you never want to lose from Proterm), even though
I used all the error correction and verification that Mr. Bredon has built
into his program and also format the disks anew each time during the backup.

Here's my setup:

Rom 01 IIgs running system 5.0.2
Apple DMA SCSI card and Seagate ST-157N-1
Ramkeeper with GSRam and Apple ram card, all fully populated
	Transwarp GS
	Sonic Blaster

I run the SCSI card with the DMA off since AE's GSRams are not *all* DMA
compatible [they'll upgrade it for $99 -- wow, how nice].

I use the same 21 disks over and over each week and have been told by a friend
that the disk are probably getting old and that could be the problem. I'm
hesitant to believe this since the verify function in ProSel's backup finds no
fault when I back them up. I also store the backups in a ziplock bag in a
metal file cabinet if that makes any difference.

In all fairness to Mr. Bredon I never had this problem with my old CMS SCSI
card.

Any ideas? Should I switch to Vitesse's stuff or buy a tape drive?

Thanks in advance.
