[comp.sys.apple2] AE GSRAM and RAMFast SCSI

ifar355@walt.cc.utexas.edu (David H. Huang) (10/02/90)

I'm thinking of getting a RAMFast SCSI card pretty soon, but I've heard
that the older GSRAM cards aren't totally DMA compatible. How can I tell if
I have one of the older GSRAMs? I bought it around late '88 (I think).

Also, will Adv. Disk Utils on the System.Tools disk partition a drive hooked
up to a RAMFast? Or do I have to use another prog?

Thanks...

The gs-ram card has a revision letter on it. I don't know which letter
was the first to support dma.

The RamFast has a built-in rom disk that appears as another scsi device.
This rom disk contains the program to format and partition the hard drives.

Does the built-in formatter support interleave changes and such?

I should have mentioned this the first time, yes the software lets you
select any interleave between 0 and 9. An interleave of 0 tells the
hard drive to pick its favorite (default) to use. Oh, and if I'm not
mistaken, this is only when you connect scsi drives to the card, I
believe the sasi drives are always formated at 4:1. With the RamFast
and a scsi drive, the docs say that unless you have a messed up drive,
you want to format it at 1:1.
