[comp.sys.apple2] Anyone interested in a crude netcheck-like shell command?

toddpw@tybalt.caltech.edu (Todd P. Whitesel) (10/07/90)

I just got working a simple NBPLookup program with ORCA/C. It is essentially
a command line NBP LookupName call, meaning that you can specify the name,
type (eg. LaserWriter, Macintosh Plus), and the zone you want to search for
(or wildcards if you want listings of all names, types, or the local zone).

It does not tell you what any zone names are yet (that's next) but you can
go into the appletalk cdevs if you want to know what the zone names are until
I add ZIP awareness to it.

This project is eventually going to be an AppleTalk Chat/transfer facility
which will be simultaneously developed for both the Mac and the GS. I am
working with a mac programming friend of mine and we are using this as a
learning experience for both of us (i.e. dealing with the teamwork, the
network issues, and the simultaneous multiplatform development).

It may be a few days before I can send/post it, so it may have full zone
support by the time I send it to those of you who are interested. Please
note that this is effectively beta material but it is still very straight-
forward so I don't anticipate any hairy problems. Also it is currently an
EXE file so you'll need some kind of shell to run it.

Could somebody write a simple freeware shell so that people can run EXE files
without having to pay for a full featured shell application?
