[comp.sys.apple2] Picket Apple! And other stories...

r.levy@cooper.cooper.EDU (Rami Levy ) (10/09/90)

This is in response to picketing Apple Computer in Cupertino,
as well as other things about Apple.

I read Jeremy Mereness' "picketing Cupertino" suggestion with
enthusiasm, and I wholeheartedly agree with it. Something has to be done,
and done NOW. If I wasn't in school in New York, you can bet I would do it!
I've already sent numerous letters to Apple regarding their
ridiculous "policy" of "support". (They've responded to each one of them.)
Once they gave me a case # and asked me to call them (collect) and discuss
my problem (that specific one was the fact that their "Authorized" Apple
Dealers (a) knew SH*T about the Apple IIgs (b) Displayed it, instead of having
a nice demo (e.g., Nucleus, Modulae, or EVEN Apple's Introduction to the Apple
IIgs) running on it, they had the bouncing apple going back and forth. Boy,
I would buy THAT! (c) refused to provide the FREE upgrade to System 5.0.2 (and
previously 5.0) for free, if at all.)
On the phone, they explained that most dealers are now catering to
business users, and if I want to see the GS displayed I should go to this one
dealer (yes, ONE dealer in the ENTIRE NEW YORK AREA) which dealt with education
customers. I didn't feel like arguing with the person on the phone, it would
not change anything.
Apple is simply NOT TAPPING the huge possiblities of the GS!! It can
make SO MUCH MONEY (isn't that the name of the "business" now?) by marketing
TWO great machines, which will NOT compete with each other - rather they can
complement each other. There is nothing wrong with building a "bridge" to link
the two, but at least SUPPORT the GS while you're at it. After all, there are
over 5.5 million Apple II users out there (or maybe 6 million, or more, I'm not
sure) which are DEDICATED to their II, and would love (?) to give Apple their
$$$ (after all, what has Apple Computer, Inc., been living off of??? Sales of
the Apple II!) if they only knew that Apple would support and upgrade and
ADVERTISE the GS! I've seen 3 commercials (last year) on TV in my whole life
for the GS.
I've had an Apple since 1982 (II+), and bought a GS in 1988. I LOVE
my computer, and would NEVER EVER EVER switch to an IBM (uggh) or even a Mac.
The Apple II has more software titles than the Mac, and I can do everything I
need to do on my GS. What the hell is their problem? If they would only stop
bickering (between theuir product divisions) and get their act together, we
would be happy, and they would be happier (RICHER). I mean, is top manage-
ment so screwed up that they don't realize what a great product the GS is?
What about marketing? Isn't it easier to market a computer that has 4096
colors, SHR graphics, and 15 voices, at a good price (albeit high), than it
is to market a small-screened, monochrome computer whose sound capabilities
are blown away by the GS? (not to mention the Mac's closed architecture and
high price tag). Also, they could mention that the GS and the Mac can (and do)
use the same keyboard (ADB), can use the same drives and read each other's
files, and even use the same hard drives (SCSI)!
The straw that broke the camel's back was their EMPTY promises of
"support". I'll believe it when I see it. I've seen NOTHING in the past
year except the VOC and system 5.0.2. Although those are major improvements,
they ARE planning on bringing out 3 new Macs. I admit, increasing the
resolution on the SHR screen may be a bit tough, but how hard can it
be to release a MIDI card, built-in stereo card (not just capability),
a faster processor, and more built-in memory in a new GS????
If AE can do it, why can't Apple? Because they need MAJOR restructuring.
And a few good knocks on the head. WAKE UP, APPLE!!! It's not
good business to leave 6 million or so users stranded...
I believe a PROTEST such as picketing their HQ in CA is the THING TO
DO, esppecially with the possiblity of BAD PRESS. Because THAT can hurt them
(even more) on Wall Street, and THAT hurts. AND it can wake up the Mac users
to see that the same may happen to them....

   Just for the record...

Apple currently has a MIDI interface for the GS, although I don't know if
it says on the package that it works with the GS. I know for a fact I've
gotten DiversiTune to work with it. It plugs into the Modem or Printer port.
And 1Meg on the motherboard is about the same as most machines come with these
days.

[One last apple bash]
