[comp.sys.apple2] Don't worry 'bout the Macs

$CSD211@LSUVM.BITNET (Mark Orr) (10/16/90)

In my last post I described the new Mac LC (supposedly meaning low-cost
color). I didn't have the prices at that time. I do now. We have little
to worry about. Apple is not changing its "premium computing" pricing
philosophy. So here are the prices on the new Macs:

Mac Classic - $999 standard, $1499 with extra memory and HD
      Mac LC - $3098 w/ color monitor
Mac IIsi - $3769 (not available until Jan '91)

As you can see, these prices are hardly competitive (when you compare
features). The Mac Classic is no more than a recycled Mac Plus with some
efficiency upgrades. The Mac LC is a bargain basement Mac II (16 MHz 68020),
except that it isn't very expandable (one '020 Direct Slot versus six NuBUS
slots on the Mac II). The Mac IIsi will use a 20 MHz 68030 and will have only
one NuBUS slot. There will, of course be educational discounts, but none of
these systems break new ground. The Mac IIsi is easily beaten by an Amiga 3000
and a NeXT can be had for a little more (when you take into account complete
systems). For the price of a Mac LC, one can still get a pretty whacked out
Apple IIgs (Zip GSx, Audio Animator, HD, memory, etc.) Of course, the Macs
will be advertised and the GS won't...

Actually, the prices are quite good in the educational area,
which is where the GS will be hit the hardest as schools feel they have
to "update" their computers.

	Mac Classic - $799 standard, $1170 with 2megs and 40megHD.
Mac LC - (THIS is the model not avail till '91) edu price still
		 uncertain.
Mac IIsi - $2450 + $450 for the new color monitor. This thing
is fast (20mhz) and comes with an HD and mucho ram.

The computer store here is already selling litterally dozens of
Macintosh classics since the introduction Monday at $799 a whack. This
price sure as hell beats out most (99% ??) PC clones. Sure, these models
are not new, but they are priced low enough to sell like hot-cakes and
expand Apple's market share, which is the real issue for Apple here.
From what I saw at the computer store today, it would be a safe
bet to invest in Apple stock now, esp. at its current low price.
