[comp.sys.apple2] Reading >2 partitions from Prodos 8

shankar@SRC.Honeywell.COM (Subash Shankar) (10/13/90)

Are there any patches or programs (even DA's) that allow Prodos 8 programs to
access more then 2 SCSI partitions?

If it matters, I have one 3.5 disk, one 5.25 drive (always inactive from the
GS/OS side), the standard RAM5 disk, and four 20 Meg partitions on two SCSI
drives.

SCSIPART. It was posted to comp.binaries.apple2 a while back. I have a copy,
I can upload it and mail it to you or make it available for anonymous FTP
-- your choice.

There is a program called 'SCSI Partition' that allows you to read from as
many SCSI partitions as you have from ProDOS 8. I've only noticed one flake in
it: It crashes when you try to use ORCA/<anything>. Of course, if you don't do
any software development, then that isn't a problem for you.

I know it is on America Online (that is where I got my copy) and I am sure it
is on some of the FTP sites (though I don't know which).

Yes Indeedee (Oh my god, di I really say that?) Anway, there is a rather neat
little ProDOS 8 patch that maps extra partitions to new slots. I think
you can have as many as 14 partitions (2X7slots) but it may be only 12.

The only drawback I have found is that when loading ProDOS 8 for the second
time since a boot (running ProTERM from Prosel 16, then running Shrinkit3)
it takes about 10 times longer to load Prodos. Its great the first time,
and since I load into Prosel 8 now and only move up to Prosel 16 when I need
GS/OS or something, the patch is only loaded once. This setup works quite
well as I can access all four partitions on my 100M drive.

I don;t have two physical drives, but it should work. If you cannot find
SCSI.PART it should be on the archive sites. Don't ask me how to get to
them though... our ftp program demands input like 12.23.547.23 to identify
machines...
