[comp.sys.apple2] IIGS VIrus Detection Reprise

carnahan@inljeff.den.mmc.com (Rich Carnahan) (10/16/90)

Some time ago I posted a note requesting information concerning
virus detection S/W for the IIGS. Amazingly enough, the only
response I received was from someone asking me to pass along any
information I obtained. Now I'm relatively certain that some
of you folks have indeed had experience with IIGS virus detection.
Won't you please enlighten me?

Thanks.

Rich

The Apple II series doesn't suffer from viruses (well, there are only
two that I have heard of- compare to OVER 40 for MS-DOS). Whether that's
because of OS design (no place in ProDOS to put one!) or because of the
attitudes of II programmers, I don't know. I don't believe I've heard
of viruses on the Amiga, either (A friend of mine who's an Amiga hacker
has never said anything about them).

So, there are only one or two programs for virus detection for the GS.
They can be found on FTP sites everywhere. I don't know exact names...

Actually, as a GS and Amiga owner, I'll tell you:

The amiga suffers from over 100 different viruses. In fact, my virus checker
has personally KILLED four different ones in the two weeks I've owned the
computer. So I guess that kills that idea.

I'd worry, folks, fellow GS owners...the more popular hard drives are on
the GS (How can you even USE a GS without one? Don't answer that Nagendra)
the more popular viruses will be. So watch it, and keep up the II support!
