[comp.sys.apple2] A good way for CDEVs to load tools?

jeffn@nuchat.UUCP (Jeff Noxon) (10/22/90)

I've finished writing my epic CDev and I would like to put the documentation
in the help window using TextEdit. I've seen other CDevs do this
(BatteryBrain comes to mind) but not without problems. I've read IIGS #58
and I am still without a solution.

BatteryBrain goes about this the wrong way, and as a result it has problems.
I won't go into it here since it is clearly explained in the technote.

For my purposes I only need TE active while the help dialog is being
displayed. It's easy to start it up when the dialog is created, but is there
any way to know when the dialog is gone so the tool can be shut back down?

Jeff

As far as I know, the only way to put a TE control in the help
window of a CDev is to do it the way it is done with Battery Brain
and Prefixer. It poses absolutely no problem unless another NDA is
opened that uses TE and then the NDA Control panel is closed or
another CDev is selected which shuts off TE. This is a problem with
*all* NDAs and CDevs. If anyone has a better solution, then I
would certainly like to know about it. Hopefully Apple is still
working on the problem. I have already offered my suggestions to
DTS... perhaps you should think up a solution and let them know
how you would do it as well.
