I have a very urgent question concerning FTL's excellent game, Dungeon Master. I noticed that there are "Altars of Rebirth" along the way down, but how does one use such a structure? One of my heroes died a rather sudden death, and I want to know if there is ANY way of reviving her. Silly me, I didn't save the game since 3 levels ago... :( BT

In-Reply-To: message from taob@pro-micol.cts.com Subject: altars of rebirth and a character who suddenly died. Just pick up the bones, and place them IN the altar. It's a really neat effect.. lightning zaps from the two yellow things inside the altar... well, just do it and see for yourself <grin>. BTW: is there any truth to the rumor that a Dungeon Master II might be in the works? That would be most excellent. I sent in my software registration card, but have received no updates etc concerning the software updates and/or new releases. Actually, it is quite typical, so I shouldn't complain. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Reardon--Magic with an attitude. Your adventurer will be brought back but with none of the stuff he/she had. You will have to return to the scene of the death inorder to get all their stuff back. Hope that helps. This is a great game isn't it? I took a break from it when I got to level 12, where you have to face monsters that can become invisible. I will get back to it soon, but I needed a break. What level are you on anyway? If you need any cheats, I have some that I will be happy to pass on. Later for now, ________________________________________________________________________ George A. Chaos Strikes Back, a expansion set for DUngeon Master is out for the atari and should be out for the amiga and IBM. They have no plans to port it to the Apple IIgs at this moment due to fairly dismal sales (but what can be expected; FTL never advertised the game!). Dungeon Master II is a different which game is supposed to be released sometime next year and should take the genre a lot furthur. Unfortunately it may also never be released for their GS. Their GS programmer left the company after DM GS.

In-Reply-To: message from tg.exc@pro-harvest.cts.com Dungeon Master II: Return of Chaos would be MOST EXCELLENT, as you put it! I haven't heard anything regarding the sequel to Dungeon Master GS, in fact, I have not heard any news at all regarding FTL Games. DM II is available for the IBM (has been for quite some time now) but I haven't seen it for the Amiga or the Atari ST either, so maybe we're not alone in this. Looks like another company to target with a letter-writing campaign!!! :-) On that subject, does anyone know if Origin Systems is DEFINITELY writing Ultima VI for the Apple II (and a GS-specific version)? BT

In-Reply-To: message from V2071A@VM.TEMPLE.EDU I am positive I tried that tactic in my first trip down (this is my second venture into the dungeons...). I placed Zedbones onto the altar, stood a few squares back (just in case!) and nothing happened. Rather disappointed, a threw his bones into a pit, to "bury" his remains. I picked up the game from the last saved position and I have regained all my lost ground in much less time, so all is well. As for cheats, DON'T SEND ME ANY!!! :) That would take all the fun out of solving the puzzles. I couldn't figure out how to kill Chaos the first time around, but someone blurted out the solution anyway. Grrrr... Anyway, do you have a list of all the items in the dungeon? I noticed a few things enhance your attributes, none of which are mentioned in the manual. The Mace Of Order increase your strength (and carrying capacity) by about +3. Gothmog's Cloak of Night increases Dexterity by +8 (!). Elven boots add 4 kg to your maximum load. Have you figured out what some of the other treasures do? You find things like a Moonstone, or a Magnifier, or an Ekhard Cross, but I can't determine their function (if they have one at all). I've made it all the way down once before, but as I've said, I couldn't kill Chaos, so I was stuck on the 13th level (killed the dragon on the 14th). I missed one of the keys to the Tomb of the Firestaff, so I guess I can't complete the game without it (since you need it to defeat Chaos). The monsters with the tentacles which turn invisible aren't that difficult to get rid of. Just store up 6th-level Dispel Creature spells (Des Ew I believe) and zap them when they are solid. I think the Vorpal Blade is also effective against them. I find the knights are the hardest to kill, with all that heavy armour on them! BT
taob@pro-micol.cts.com (Brian Tao) (10/25/90)
In-Reply-To: message from 6600prao@ucsbuxa.ucsb.edu Would think another letter-writing campaign will be able to convince FTL to write it for the GS? The basic code and screens for all four versions should be practically identical, with additional machine-specific enhancements for each version. I saw the IBM version at Mr. Diskette (a franchised hardware/software retailer) about 6 months ago. It includes context-sensitive hints and a character icon editor (among other things). Maybe I can get someone with an IBM to buy it, and we'll swap computers for a month to play each other's games... BT

While we're discussing Dungeon Master, I thought I'd have the nerve to ask a few questions. Warning! Spoilers follow - press 'n' now if you haven't reached level 14 yet! (I'm being deliberately vague below so I won't spoil the fun for anyone who hasn't already solved these problems. In particular, I'm talking about "thingies" instead of calling things by their real name) After three weeks of playing, I finally reached level 14 and snatched the power thingy from the dragon. Having already found the rioght thingy on the seventh level, I joined them to get what seems to be the ultimate weapon. I then found that all exits from level 13 have been blocked. The dragon seemed completely impossible to kill, so I'm concentrating on level 13. I've killed all the monsters there except the shadowy fellow. Am I correct in assuming that killing him is the object of the game? And how do I kill him? I zapped him with the "combined thingies" for at least fifteen minutes and though it seems he took some damage, he's still alive and kicking (very much so - I let my guard slip for a moment and he killed Boris, Tiggy and Zed, so now Elija is trying to fight it out alone). Also, when I wield the "combined thingy", I get a menu with "Invoke, Fuse, Phase Cage". It's rather clear whjat "invoke" does, but what are the other two commands good for? I'd be grateful for some hints (have to finish the game quickly so I can concentrate on my courses!) I agree DM is an awesome game. I have yet to finish it thought. I am on the last level fighting the Dark Lord. He has taken around 2-3 hours of continuous pummeling of anything and everything I could muster and still lives because my party dies of starvation. Anyone know of a way to beat him? Do fireballs affect him? What makes him tick? I am using flux cages and stopping time on him but he takes soooooo much damage and refuses to die. Has anyone here beaten him yet? If so, how?

In-Reply-To: message from bill@pro-gateway.cts.com I have a the complete set of Dungeon Master maps which I can Binscii and upload to comp.bin.apple2 if you want. It was done by some chap with the Amiga version of DM, and the maps include all the doors, passageways, hidden rooms, fake walls, traps, pits, switches and staircases. A very detailed piece of work. They were originally in GIF format, but I've converted them to 640-mode type $C1 graphics. They are two screens tall, so you will need a paint program like DeluxePaint II to view and print them (I don't think AWGS will handle 640x400 pics). BT

As you have discovered, the fused Ultimate-Weapon-thingy is what you need to demolish the shadowy dude. According to my DM tip sheet, you have to use a Magical Box thingy to sort of "freeze" him, then use Cage on him, run around to the other side of him (the black fuzzy side), Cage him again, then Fuse the whole contraption together. Bingo, Chaos is history! Hope you understand what I mean by all those "thingies"... ;-) You should try killing the dragon. It's worth it (especially when you're dying of hunger, hint, hint...) I had a couple left over after demolishing the dragon, and I'm positive they work on Chaos as well.
