[comp.sys.apple2] TYBALT FTP IS BACK!!

toddpw@truebalt.caltech.edu (Todd P. Whitesel) (11/05/90)

TYBALT is now a Sun 4/280, and anonymous FTP has been re-enabled (they got to
copying over the FTP directories).

SORRY 'bout that, but I wasn't warned that FTP would be disabled for a few
days after the new tybalt came up. Apparently it took them longer to execute
the entire move than was anticipated. NCSA telnet has been useless since the
FastPath crashed after the move (it depends on tybalt for its list of networks)
so the people with Macs in their rooms (including my roommate) have been
gnashing their teeth all weekend. I'm using my ][+ and the terminal server to
log in from my desk, but I've been keeping a low profile about that :)

HOWEVER, the point of all this is that I relied on NCSA Telnet to transfer
stuff to/from tybalt and that is down. The other method I've been planning on
for maintaining the pub/apple2 directory is via AppleShare (yes, AppleShare).
The AppleShare imitator package running on the new tybalt _claims_ to be AFP
2.0 compatible and the AppleShare FST can log in to it. However, the prodos
file type info is not set and Finder gets majorly confused. I have been
encouraged to attempt modifications to the source, but until the FastPath
comes back up I can't test anything or even see tybalt's server from the
control panel.

WHEN this is all taken care of by the campus computing organization, I will
be doing some major re-org of the tybalt directories. I also plan to introduce
a better suffix scheme for packed software -- mail me if you have ideas, I like
the scheme I have in mind but I certainly can't think of everything. I will
also be finally uploading those AppleTalk utilities I mentioned, and some other
goodies.
