[comp.sys.apple2] Some uploads to comp.binaries

taob@pnet91.cts.com (Brian Tao) (11/10/90)

I have received a lot of mail regarding System 5.0.3. I know it is
available on GEnie (where Apple released its system software), but apparently
it has not made it to America On-line yet. No, I will NOT shrink and binscii
the two disks!!! How would you like to send two 500K+ text files at 2400-bps
to a remote ProLine site? Can you say "probable line noise"? Be patient, and
it will certainly come to you. I imagine it will be a couple of weeks before
the dealers get copies of 5.0.3, so check in with them from time to time. It
has many improvements and bug fixes over System 5.0.2, including the annoying
StandardFile glitch which caused the system to hang if the current prefix
could not be found on any drive. It also auto-highlights the file name when
you select "Save As..." now, so you can type in the name right away, instead
of hitting Clear first.

There is also interest in the sound sample to ASIF converter, so I'll post
that on comp.binaries as soon as possible. If anyone doesn't have access to
comp.bin, I'll e-mail you a copy.

System 5.03 has been on GEnie (A2); AO (ADV & AHW),
and Compuserve (APPPROD) since November 8th, 1201am.
They were released at the exact same time on all
three services. Also, this may have been previously
discussed [and if so, ignore it - it doesn't matter
to me :)] but are you sure you can post 5.03 to a
ftp site/comp.bin.apple2? You do need a licensing
agreement to distribute it.

As of Nov. 8th, 1990 GS/OS 5.0.3 System disk and System Tools
is available from America Online in the Developer's Conference.
I am currently running it from my harddisk after spending 113
minutes downloading it.

It is on AOL as of 10-Nov-1990. I downloaded both shrunk disks this morning.

The reason for not uploading it to comp.binaries.apple2 is that we do not
have Apple's permission to do so. The software is Apple proprietary, not
freeware.

I never intended to upload System 5.0.3 onto comp.bin.a2 anyway... long
text uploads usually don't go over too well from the lack of error-checking.
The two disks would probably take up about a meg and a bit of message space.

I know this has been asked before, but I don't remember the answer,
and I think it was a while ago... Here's the question: Is there any
way we can get Apple to put the system disk up on Apple's own FTP
site? Mac System 6.0.7 is there, why isn't 5.0.3?

Because they had to go through all kinds of legal jazz to get the Mac system
there in the first place, and it's taking even longer to do the same for the
GS system.

Apple plans to move all it's anonymous FTP stuff to another machine, which
will have ALL of Apple's officially released software and developers' notes
available for both product lines. However, I think they have been at it long
enough -- I don't see what is holding them up after this long.

What is the site # for Apple's FTP site?

If you wanted apple to put it on there, I would send a mail messahe to someboy
in apple and ask them (ifyou know the user id of anybody over that would have
any control over that)
