[comp.sys.apple2] FLOPPY DRIVE OPTION

xcskier@tc.fluke.COM (John Gilbert) (11/13/90)

If someone could help me out, please?

Panasonic makes a 5 1/4" floppy drive with model # JU-455-xAAG, where x is 5,
7, or 8. An option for this drive is some kind of switch that detects the
presence of the floppy. We (Fluke) use the floppy drive in one of our
instruments, and another could, except that we get the drive without the switch,
and the second instrument really needs the switch function.

We could get the option, if we order 10,000 floppy drives. Unfortunately,
that works out to be a twenty-year supply for our usage. Why not ask
Panasonic what the switch is? Well, I did. The engineer was less than
cooperative. Evidently, he wants us to buy drives that we will never use,
when all I wanted was a few part numbers.

You ask, why am I posting this story in comp.sys.apple?

The Panasonic engineer did let slip that the only customer that uses that
option is Apple. So in some Apple computer lives a Panasonic floppy drive
with a switch setup we need. I would like to know which one.

What I really need to know, in increasing order of difficulty, is:

	1)	What Apple computer uses the Panasonic JU-455 drive?
	2)	What hardware detects the floppy? (The presumed mounting
location is the same side of the drive as the write-protect
notch, but at the back edge of the floppy, about 3/4" from the
side. There are two holes in the chassis there, one threaded,
one not.) A part # and manufacturer of the part would be great!
	3)	Description of where the hardware is attached to the pcb.

#1 would be greatly appreciated, and would help me out alot. #2 and 3 would
earn you the title of comp.sys.apple.hero, with all the groveling and
accolades that go with, along with my eternal thanks.

Reply by e-mail to xcskier@fluke. THANKS!!
