[comp.sys.apple2] A Portable //c ?

ehsu@husc9.harvard.edu (Visual Editor) (11/15/90)

I just got an old //c and I want to make it really portable. I figure only
battery power and a flat display stand in the way of that mission. Does anyone
know where I can get a flat display for the //c? I read about the "C-VUE" LCD
screen, but they seem to have gone out of business. I'm not too worried about
the battery power, but if I had a flat screen, I'd take the //c everywhere.

Well, I have a ][c+ and have been anxiously awaiting an Gel-Cell
type battery to be offered by someone (Hopefully AE!). The ][c+'s power
supply is internal, and very easy to remove, so I figured it was only a
matter of time before one was offered.
Since I have not seen such a product, does anyone know enought
about "building" batteries that they might be able to tell me how to
build one myself, or where to get one... and how long it might last
under normal operation?
As for the LCD screen... I'm looking for one too!! Any ideas?

Apple ][+ ex-owner, but it was sure fun torching!

Apple used to have a LCD panel that used the auxillary video port on the
back of the //c. I have been looking for a nice flat screen display for
some time now (obviously I didn't buy the apple version). The display was
about 3 inches tall and about 9 inches wide (fat squished text). I haven't
seen the C-Vue panel, but I think it is pretty much the same idea.

I have a nice Epson panel (just the panel w/ refresh circuitry) that is
6" x 8" (sort of fat squished text), but its interface is bit mapped pixels.
I picked it up CHEAP ($20) from a surplus parts store in Boston but have
never taken the time to look into interfacing it to the //c video port.
If a good 9" -> 12" diagonal flat-screen display (color not necessary) were
made for the //c I also would be very interested (is AE listiening? ;-)

I have a C-Vue screen (from Roger Coates) -- no, I'm not selling it --
It works OK. I made a cable to plug into the cigarette lighter socket
but I've only used it a couple of times in the car- once while camping.
More often, I've used a motorcycle battery during power outages. It will
run the //c for a day or so - when I first made the cable I tried it out.

The switching power supply in the //c really lets you know when the battery
power's getting down, too- it makes a pitiful howling noise.

So nice ti see how many people tried to make their //c portable! I tried
with my 2 6-V 1200mAh Ni-Cd batteries, and it gives me 30 min of usage
with extensive diskaccess. When the power is low, the screen dimmed when
the disk light cames up and make some strange noice. Not really a usable
configuration, but was fun to have my //c operating with baterries :-)

I hope to have a LCD or any flat-panel style display too.

Does anybody knows anything about C-Drive? which supposed to be an internal
HD for //c. That will really make //c powerful! too bad AI went under...
I was just about to order it.
