johnmac@fawlty.towers.oz (John MacLean) (11/20/90)
I have been quietly reading c.s.a2 lately without much input, so I figured it was about time I gave an update on The Graphic Exchange (TGE): As I indicated some time in mid-late 1989 TGE 4.0 was completed. Unfortunately, I did not have much success getting Roger Wagner Publishing to bring it to market. They were more than happy with version 3.6, the P8 text version, because it had the ability to read Mac disks directly, and was still selling well. They also were completely snowed over with Hyper Studio sales and seemed to have little interest in TGE. TGE 4.0, and TGE 4.1 never made it to market, depsite continued promises. Several times I was lead to believe it was shipping when the documentation and packaging was still not complete. Eventually, only a few months ago, TGE 4.2.2 started shipping. If anyone wants it, or wants to update to their old version, contact RWP. In all this time I have completed approximately another 30 or so toolsets for TGE, a very useful CDA, and part of another conversion utility. My plan was to release 2 library disks for TGE, each with about 20 toolsets and utilities. The first library disk is complete, and I had beta versions out many months ago. It contains 20 (or is it 19?) toolsets and the CDA. Unfortunately, I have been unable to get RWP to bring this to market but am still trying. My current plan is to release the first library disk as shareware/freeware at Christmas if I do not have reasonable guarentees (and a signed contract) from RWP at this time. I will be bitterly disappointed if I have to do this, but I would much rather get this software out to the people who might make good use of it than to have it sit on my shelf forever. If this happens I will send a new copy to some of my beta testers and have it uploaded on c.s.b. Regardless of what happens with the first library disk, I still intend to ship the second library disk. I have some time on my hands now, and am hard at work again. TGE is now at version 4.3.0 with some new features, and I am working on the utility to ship with the second library disk. I hope to have it all complete by Feb 1991 when I head off overseas.
