First, a little history/background: 1. I use sciibin on my mainframe to unpack binary postings to the net. 2. Downloading using zmodem batch gives me tons of errors which adds about 1/2 to the download time. 3. Only ymodem, not ymodem batch is an option for my mainframe program. This protocol doesn't give errors so download time is improved. The only problem is, I have to download a file at a time. 4. Arc is available on my mainframe and shrinkit can unpack arc so combining all the files in one, downloading them and then unpacking them twice looks promising. I packed three shrinkit files into an arc file and downloaded them to my IIgs, ROM 1, tons of RAM. Now to the problems/observations: 1. How come the arc files were smaller than the shrinkit files? Two were 97% and one was 88% of the shrinkit files. Can I keep this up, arcing/shrinking over and over until the file is one bit? ;-) 2. I thought Shrinkit had hung since the thermometer went all the way across almost immediately and then the "watch" just sat there (Cancel worked, so I knew some sanity remained). I then selected only one file, went to the bathroom and when I came back it was unpacked. Heartened by this I selected the other two files and timed them: ARC Size Unarc size Time File 1 1947 2208 1 min File 2 13779 14132 3 min Did I do something wrong? Is there any way to speed this particular process up a tad? Forgive me if this has been discussed before and I missed it by confusing it with the normal Apple bashing posts to this newsgroup.
