[comp.sys.apple2] Some Addional 5.0.3 Comments

araftis@polyslo.CalPoly.EDU (Alex Raftis) (11/09/90)

Don't let the little things fool you, they can make a big difference. On the
surface, the 5.0.3 upgade seems to do little, but there's a couple of fixes
that make it well worth while to download or copy.

First of all, some major bugs with the Resource Manager seem to have been
fixed. I played aroung with both Genesys and TML Pascal and was unable to get
either to trash a menu resource. Both programs would do this regularly with
5.0.2. Also, I had to create some 25+ resource and randomly edit these for
about 20 minutes before I could get Genesys to crash. This to me implies that
some other fixes with the Resource Manager have been fixed.

Secondly, the TextEdit tool set seems to have been fixed. Owner's of TML Pascal
II will know about this bug. The Text Edit tool appears to no longer crash
when a large block of selected text is deleted. I haven't thoroughly tested
this, but deleted some blocks of about 200+ lines, and each failed to mangle my
sample text file.

Finally, having looked over a friends spec sheet from Apple about 5.0.3,
nearly all the tool kits, and all the tool patches have been modified. This
should basically mean a much more reliable system for all of us.

Is System Disk 5.0.3 available for downloading off any ftp sites?

Also, the 5.0.3 O/S has added a little spice to the getfile and savefile
dialogs. Now, if I take a disk out of my drive and put another in, it switches
to the new disk automatically, with no need for the switch-disk keystroke.
The switch-disk button has been replaced by a volumes button, which when
pressed gives a list of all volumes on line and waits for you to select
any of them. Not such an advantage for the average two-drive user, but for
someone with one or more SCSI devices it would probably be nice to be able
to go from device 2 to device 1 without having to switch through devices
3 through 5 on the way.

Another nice thing they COULD have put in the SF dialogs is a pop-down
menu in place of the pathname line above the scrolling window. Again, not
much benefit for floppy users, but for the hard drive owners with files buried
5 or 6 folders deep, it would make a convenient way to back up any number of
levels in one shot.
