[net.space] ABM-SW-And the always say die crowd

jj (04/24/83)

Frankly, I disagree completely with Jan, but I'm not going to argue
about it after this, since I really don't want to get into a sophistry
contest.

As far as the Edison/ABM comparison, I can only comment that the
facts that are described are for the most part right, except that there
is some spirited arguement over the "infeasability" proofs. <I mean the
proofs, not the feasibility of the idea.> The facts mentioned in the
article, however true they may be, are, unfortunately, related only
by virtrue of being adjacent in text, they are NOT referring to
identical situations, nor does the equivelance drawn between them hold.

Perhaps this discussion should move to net.flame, or
net.politics, where it more properly belongs. Comments about the
technical feasiblity, however, might be reasonably duplicated here.

It's clear from this arguement that technical problems and facts
have no clear effect on a populace that is more easily swayed by
defeatism and unfulfilled promises. While I deplore the defeatism that
I see reflected in several of the opposing articles, I know of no way
to restore in these individuals a more enterprising state, hence,

I leave this arguement. (I hope that I shall not again need to join it
in net.space.)
