[comp.sys.apple2] Oops! Fickle finger fumbles...

seals@uncecs.edu (Larry W. Seals) (11/16/90)

I can't believe I posted to comp.sys.apple again! Oh, well. Thanks
once more to those souls who answered anyway. Your information was
well received.

For those who didn't catch my previous posting, I just inherited my
in-laws Apple ][e and was asking some general things about the
hardware/software.

Since I now know that I own a Duo-Disk, would it be worth my while to
unload it and pick up, say, a hard drive and controller. Recommenda-
tions and costs, please.

My wife just asked if it's possible to run a HP LaserJet IIp (or any
other laser) from it (at work we have a tty terminal with an aux
printer port that prints screen dumps from DMV to a HP IID with no
special software) and if any ][e software supports lasers.

Lastly, how about color monitors and the cards to support them. Any
suggestions?

Thanks in advance for your help!

About color monitors...
Buy any old color NTSC composite monitor (Apple makes a decent one, but
there are plenty of others), and just plug it in to the monitor port.
You can also connect the monitor port to the Video In connector on your
VCR, and record what gets displayed and use your TV as a monitor.

Do you have another floppy drive to use? If not, then don't get rid
of your sole floppy disk to get a hard drive, for you need some way
of getting standard programs onto the hard drive. The only two ways
to do this are, from another disk drive or by downloading.

Not sure about the HP Laserjet, I know the Apple Laserwriters can be
driven out of a Super Serial Card, and I know that PublishIt 3 can
support the SSC/Laserwriter setup, as can the sligtly less other-program
compatible GEOS modules.

For word processing and 80 column work, an AppleColor Composite monitor
would be good, or a green screen. Normal TV will take the color and
40 column mode, but 80 columns is very blurry on normal TV screens.
