[comp.sys.apple2] using //c as a terminal...

My roommate has an apple //c which he rarely uses, so I am planning to
use it as a terminal to connect to my school's SUN. However, my knowledge
regarding apple // series computers is very limited, and I desperately
need the advice from any apple // users out there. These are the questions
I have (please pardon me if they have been asked before, or if you think
they're too basic).

First, is there a text-editor that lets me create programs so that I could
down load them later when I am actually connected to the school's machine?

Second, what is a good commucations program with the ability to emulate
vt100, and is not filled with icons and menus during the use of //c as a
teminal (ie. while I am actually connected to school's machine; I basically
want a clean screen)?

Third and basic, I am planning to buy a Hayes compatible 2400 baud modem.
Is this a problem? I mean do I need to get a special cable?

Any information would be appreciated!!
