[comp.sys.apple2] Harmoni Drivers

rtyu@magnus.ircc.ohio-state.edu (Rafael T Yu) (11/28/90)

The Harmoni package of printer drivers have been release for a while already
and I wonder if anyone in the net have any comment about then. Specially,
its performance with HP printers like the DeskJet 500 and LaserJet IIP.

Also, have anyone used the Independece drivers from Seven Hills. In other
words I'm asking if someone has a review on printer driver, either Harmoni,
Independence or Apple's. I would like more information since I'm planning
to get either a DeskJet 500 or a LaserJet IIP for my GS.

Thanks in advance for your help....

I purchased the Harmonie drivers the week they were released, and at the
same time purchased an HP IIP Laserjet printer.. In the few weeks that I
have had them I have really taught the printer how to sing and even dance..

It works beautifully in both GSOS as well as P8.. No Appletalk or serial is
needed. I just unpluged the paralell cord from my Epson printer and right
into the back of the laserjet. I since have added 2 additional megs of
memory to the printer as well as a font cartridge containing 425 fonts..

to date I have only found one program I could not get it to print with,
and that was Publish-it, and I don't know if that is the fault of the
program, or me, since I did not try every possible printer combination
supported within the program.. However it does not offer support for any
laser printer other than the laserwriter.

Some of the programs I have tried it with and had no problems are,
Appleworks 3.0, Appleworks GS, Multiscribe GS, DB Master Professional,
Word Perfect GS, ASCII Express Professional..

Seven Hills as best I know has NOT YET released their drivers, but they
will work with serial only. Vitesse plans to begin releasing libraries of
"Contours" outline fonts, with the first due hopefully by the first of the
year.. The original planned name was "Profile", but Apple raised their
corporate hackels over that one... Each library is expected to contain
about 15 fonts, and at least 4 libraries are planned (if sales support
them).

Rafael, I've been beta testing the Independence drivers for the Laserjet IIp,
and I can say that as things stand today, Independence is MUCH better than
Harmonie. ON the Other hand Independence will be for the HP printers only and
will include multiple fonts to make the best use of the drivers. Harmonie,
which currently has trouble with HP printers, also supports many 24 pin
printers. Harmonie has some features that are lacking (but not really
necessary) in Independence.
I've also used Postscript on my Laserjet IIp. Postscript gives the most
flexiblity of all...but at the cost of a little independence...as I must print
to disk to use Postscript and I must correct the Postscript output first before
sending it to the printer (to correct mistakes in Apple's Laserwriter Driver
that doesn't map correctly the appropriate GS Screen fonts to their Postscript
counterparts).
Harmonie (using the printers built in fonts) is the fastest printing.
Independence using bitmap is next. Harmonie bit mapped is 3rd fastest and
Postscript brings up the rear in terms of speed. Power<->Speed. The tradeoff.
