[comp.sys.apple2] Postscript downloader

dougm@pnet51.orb.mn.org (Doug Mcintyre) (12/06/90)

Well since I see so many requests for a postscript downloader, and a
font downloader, I plan to jump into this capitalistic market place here..

I have most of my postscript downloader/ Mac type-1 font translator done right
now, (just the boring clean up stuff), and since I have no more money left for
any of these new books Apple keeps on coming out with, how big of a demand,
and how much would people be willing to pay for this thing as shareware?
I was thinking of $10 or so?

Its a simple program, but boring and tedious to put in all the routines for
desktop stuff, but I should have it done by mid winter break...

Basically it throws up a TextEdit that you can load/save/type text into then
download it. The font translator part converts the binary Mac resource type
into ASCII postscript and puts it up into the TE so that you can download it
like regular PS, or even change it a bit if you want, (ie. the family name to
something you'd like.)

One problem though, is that I haven't really figured out a good scheme to have
IIGS fonts coresponding to the postscript fonts for the laserwriter driver
yet, but that will be forthcoming.

Doug,
I'm interested in anything you can do to give us access to postscript. How
about a postscipt graphics converter? Also, is it possible to make the
postscript downloader print to the Imagewriter (since most of use don't have
laser printers)?

Doug, I've been working with Postscript on my GS for quite a while now (7
months). I've used Snowterm as a Font downloader, but I sure would appreciate a
real dedicated program for that purpose...as with Snowterm I have to change the
Printer port over to Modem Connected to get Snowterm to work. It all works of
course for me. I've sucessfully used several Type 3 fonts with my Postscript
emulation cartridge, but since mine was an early version the cartridge couldn't
handle Type 1 fonts.
[I've since sent in my cartridge for updating to the latest version which
will be able to handle Type 1 fonts]
I've also E-mail'd John Snow about making Snowterm into a Font downloader
program (it would sure be easier to do that then to add protocol transfer to
the current version! <grin>) He was thinking about it, but seemed more
interested in finishing Snowterm now that he has some spare time again.
For $10 I'd probably send you a check with out hesitation. I've already
registered my Snowterm copy because I was using it so much (for Postscript
downloading.). Just be sure to make it a full GS/OS application. ProDOS 8
doesn't even see half of my partitions....
