[comp.sys.apple2] Apple to IBM conversion

davidbrierley@lynx.northeastern.edu (12/09/90)

I would like to know if anyone out there would like to convert some
Appleworks files to IBM ASCII text files for me. I remember seeing an
advertisement for a company that did that, but I don't remember where I saw
the ad. I do know that the conversion can be done with the PC Transporter or
with Crossworks; however, buying either of those options is too expensive,
considering that I only have a few files to convert. I don't have a modem
to use Kermit for the transfer either. I'll supply disks, packaging, and
postage. If you can help, please respond by e-mail. Thanks.

How to convert AppleWorks files to IBM on the cheap...

1. Get a copy of PC-Kermit for the IBM and Kermit-65 for the Apple II.
   Price: FREE

2. Get a null modem cable or serial cable with null modem adapter to connect
the IBM to the Apple II. This will be either DB25F or DB9F at the IBM
end and DB25M or DIN 8 at the Apple II end depending on what model of
PC and Apple II you have. Depending on your situation you may end up
using a conglomeration of adapters. You can make you own cable if
you like, but it doesn't cost much more to just buy premade stuff.
Price: $20 - $50 depending on how you do it.

3. If you don't have a IIgs or a serial card in your Apple II, you'll need
something like a Super Serial Card.
Price: about $50 for a clone or used card

4. Load up your files in AppleWorks and save as ASCII text, or DIF, or
   whatever you need.

5. Connect the machines together and fire up Kermit on each machine then
merrily send and receive. That's it. ;-)

If you can't afford this method, one might wonder how in the heck you
managed to get a computer in the first place. :)

What about a free method to accomplish the same thing:

Upload your IBM/Apple files to another system.
Download the files to your IBM/Apple.

Just a bit slower, that's all.
