[comp.sys.apple2] IRC Woes - people interested: listen up.

marekp@pnet91.cts.com (Marek Pawlowski) (12/14/90)

It seems my idea was a good one. As a result, I have decided that a get
together at 7pm EDT on channel "+Apple" on the IRC, every Saturday, will be at
hand. I will make a point of being there as much as I can.

A short tutorial on the IRC:

The IRC can be used on most Internet systems, with IRC installed. It is
simply called by typing "irc" or "irc chat_name" from the shell prompt.
Since everyone uses only one-word identifiers, and they all have to be
different, it's up to you. I enter with "irc Marek".

Once in the IRC, you can do several things:

/nick nickname - This will change your current one-word
                          identifier to "nickname".
/who - This will list EVERYONE on EVERY channel.
/who identifier - This will tell you where a certain person is.
/who * - This tells you what channel you are on, and
                          who's in it.
/who channel_name - This tells you who is in the specified channel.

/join channel - This will join you to a channel. In most cases,
channel names are preceded with a plus (+).
For our needs, "/join +Apple" will do it.

/quit - Will sign you off, and you're put back to
                          your shell prompt.

/msg user message - This "whispers" to "user" whatever text you put
                          after that.

To say something publicly, just type your message, and end it by hitting
return. It will be echoed. Other people's messages will just show up.

For those that DON'T have IRC access. Mail me, and I will give you help.

NOTE: If you enter the IRC, and do a "/who" and there is VERY little people
(<20?) and they are all local, then you need to connect to a server (see
previous message on server names, and how to do it).

You can ttelnet to these servers (port 6667, so you do "telnet sitename 6667")
and it should work, in most cases. Don't abuse these, please.

I hope to see you all there..
