QuickMail<tm> from Rick Ewing Attn:INFO-APPLE ___________________________________________________________________ Reply to: RE>Re: Rush Limbaugh on Apple Given Rush Limbaugh's general view on the world, I'm not at all surprised at his comments on Apple (since those comments reflected the general community at one time), but I have to question Rush's show in general. Rush Limbaugh (*not* his real name) is the host of a three hour national "talk" show airing from 12 noon to 3 pm EST. His views are conservative at best, and loony hawkish at worst. He loves taking pock shots at just about anything in the liberal community, or perceived to be liberal. His "homeless updates", "animal rights updates", and "feminazi updates" are a common feature of his program. What really bothers me is that his show breaks all the rules of traditional talk show, but in a negative way. He rarely has anything positive to say about anything but himself ("Talent on loan from God"). He has no guests, which means all you get to listen to is him griping and bitching about things day in and day out, usually about how the looney liberals are screwing things up again. He's even gone after Bush recently, challenging whether or not that he is a true conservative. His opinions are often seeded with outright deragatory remarks which are based in only rumor or heresay, and sometimes downright incorrect in fact. He does take calls, making him a "talk" show, but quite often things degenerate into a "talking down" session ("you people this...you people that") to anyone who doesn't agree with what he has to say. Not to say that Rush Limbaugh isn't popular. If you believe what he says, then he is currently the most listened to host on radio right now. But then again, so was Morton Downey Jr. Downey was extremely popular with his style of "talk" show, but of course his style grew tiresome very quickly and he's now off the air. I don't question that Rush has the right to air his conservative views to anyone who cares to listen to them. But he is an entertainer before he is a talk show host, and I believe that sooner or later, the majority of his audience will quickly begin to wane as he continues to treat them like children. A little disclaimer about me. Okay, so I'm a liberal democrat. And damn proud of it. I even like to listen to certain conservative columnists like Will and Buckley, because at least they make sound arguments that provoke thought. And George Will can always play devil's advocate, even to his own views, which I greatly respect. I even think that Larry King (*not* his real name either!) can get out of line sometimes with his guests. But at least King gives his callers that disagree with him a chance, and can understand different points of view. Limbaugh doesn't do this, and until he learns, I believe that untimately his show will fail on the long term (5-10 years) basis. --Rick Ewing Vanderbilt University ___________________________________________________________________

Well, first of all (for the second time :) Rush didn't bash Apple. Here's exactly what he said: "Apple has long sought to earn profit with excessive margins rather than a broad base of owners of many machines. Now they seek to expand their market sh are by introducing reasonably-priced low end machines which have become so popu lar that Apple can't make them fast enough and as a result, Apple-only dealers are losing (as in the case of the one Virginia Beach dealer, $125,000 in six we eks) huge orders. It seems Apple has never understood the priority price plays in the consumer's purchase decision." He didn't call them "money grubbing scum" as someone on the net sumed up what he said. He even suggested they need to advertise on his show to truly reach their new market. (as quoted from Rush.) >Rush Limbaugh (*not* his real name) is the host of a three hour [reasons why he diss-agrees with Rush and/or diss-likes him omitted] >A little disclaimer about me. Limbaugh doesn't do this, and until he learns, I >believe that untimately his show will fail on the long term (5-10 >years) basis. He usually (as opposed to 'always') states things the way he perceives them to be true. Whether or not they're true is a different story. But people get upset when he says things that they don't agree with. He also has the guts to say things that most talk show hosts don't have the guts to talk about. For example, his animal rights updates, etc. (and now, his condomn updates :). He doesn't try to sound objective like alot of talk show people do or even 'compassionate' towards them, because they usually don't for his point of view. The show isn't JUST listening to Rush. Most of the show is open to callers. He gives everyone a chance to speak their view and state their opinion and why they feel that way. If he doesn't agree, he'll ask them questions to try to understand why they feel that way, then he explains why he may or may not dissagree. There was even this time when some ignorant black woman called. HOLD ON!!! I'm -NOT- linking 'black' and 'ingorance' together. It's just that this ONE particular woman was definitely ignorant, and she happened to be black . Anyway, she was screaming and yelling at Rush, saying that the white mans time was over and that black people were going to take over and destroy everyting that white people had built. Well, Rush let her ramble on for several minutes (making a fool out of herself the whole time). If that's not fair and decent, then I don't know what is. I consider myself fair and have a decent amount of patience, but I probably would not have given here that much air time. On another note, he's not really up on the enviorenment (ozone layer, green house affect, etc.) and talks as if he is. I don't agree with everything he says, but he's definitely not like Morton Downey Jr. as you suggested. Whether or not his show will last.... well, you can't say it's going to last just because you don't like what he says. His audience is growing everyday. Whether or not he's right, he definitely has a following and there's alot of people who agree with him (although, I don't agree with everthing he does) and it seems that those people will keep his show going for along time. P.S. He owns an APPLE Macintosh IIfx with Raster Ops 24-bit card, Seiko 14" monitor with 32 MB RAM. So, I wouldn't call him an apple basher. OK, now we've heard someone (totally) against Rush and someone (some-what-mostl y) for him. Now, how 'bout we call it a truce and get back to Apple II's? >--Rick Ewing > Vanderbilt University > > >___________________________________________________________________ ---------------------------------------- Michael J.
