[comp.sys.apple2] Background Sound.CDA

sb@pnet91.cts.com (Stephen Brown) (12/17/90)

Background Sound is a Classic Desktop Accessory (CDA) for the IIGS which is
supposed to be able to load and play both SoundSmith files and SynthLAB files.
I have tried it and it works perfectly with SS files. But when I load ANY
SynthLAB file, it loads, plays, and bombs.

I have tried this with both System Disk 5.0.2 and 5.0.3 on a ROM 01. A few
others I know have found this problem. (version 1.1) Are we doing something
wrong or is there (gasp!) a bug??

Thanks...

To play synthlab songs with BGSound you need to remember two things:

1. TOOL035 had better be in your system/tools folder. Synthlab can find it on
the synthlab disk, but BGSound can't.

2. DON'T EVEN TRY to run a prodos 8 program with a synthlab song running in the
background. Things will go boom because the MIDI synth tool has to use some of
the memory that prodos 8 also needs.

Parik Rao, the author of BGSound, confessed that there is a bug that
prevents the playing of synthLAB sequences. Version 2.0 is available
from the dude himself on America Online.

Note that you still need Tool 35 installed to be able to play the synthLAB
sequences.

I have Tool035 in */system/tools/
And I haven't tried to run a P8 program while a SynthLAB song is running.

I enter the Desk Accessories menu, select Background Sound, load a SynthLAB
song... when it begins to play, the text screen is jumbled, as it appears that
I have visited the monitor with a really screwy text window down the lefthand
margin. The only exit is control-reset, which, incidentally also kills the
music.
