I was looking around the ker*mit. directory (on shark.nosc.mil FTP

   Hi all,
Just picked up a copy of Kermit 387 and I can't seem to get the thing
to receive files. Kermit 386 worked fine with the setup I have but when
I type receive on this new version all that happens is the computer
freezes up and I have to do a cntl-reset to get out of it. I have a IIgs
rom 1, 1.25 meg....etc etc. Any ideas? Thanks much!

Where did you 'pick up a copy of Kermit 3.87'? Unless I've missed some
very important mail, it HAS NOT BEEN RELEASED YET. If you are beta
testing, then you should report problems you encounter to:

        medin-t@shark.nosc.mil

If you are not a beta tester and want to be, then ask Mr. Medin. I'm not
sure whether Ted objects to the beta being made widely available, but you
should at least KNOW you're working with a beta and know where to report
problems. I'm not saying it's your fault. You never know how many hands
something passes through before it gets to someone who asks a question. :)

Is it possible to set the timeout in Kermit. When dealing with networked
stuff, you generally nead longer timeouts than if, for instance, you were
connected to a local BBS or something. Anyway, can kermit be set to
receive batch? I usually use ProTERM, because I can type "send *" or some-
thing and then tell ProTERM to receive batch. But the problem is that many
times, proterm times out too quickly and aborts the whole thing. Lately,
things have been worse, because some grad. students here have been running
parallel processing experiments on our Sequent... these make it completely
halt in its tracks for up to a minute at times. This is really a pain when
you're trying to transfer a large file.

Anybody have any ideas? I know the Sequent side is no problem, because the
time-out there is set to 5 minutes or something. Thanks! :-)

Could somebody please repost Kermit 3.87 to
Comp.binaries.apple2? The one originally posted was v3.86. Or better
yet, are there any ftp sites with the real version of 3.87?

I looked into getting it off Columbia Watsun, but it required
dos 3.3 to undo it, and i don't even have a 5.25" drive anymore.

thanks

Kermit 3.87 is available from watson.cc.columbia.edu in ProDOS format
in the file apppro.bns. Docs in text format in apple.doc and in
PostScript format in apple.ps.

These are all in directory kermit/a (if I recall correctly).

H. Grant Delaney writes me in e-mail:

[I have been unable to duplicate your problems with Kermit 3.87. What
are your settings etc.]

The problem with ctrl-s not working some of the time has been fixed. I had
xon/xoff flow control set in Kermit; I turned off flow control and the
problem disappeared.

I haven't had the program simply hang recently; it did happen a number of
times before and wouldn't respond to anything, but it hasn't reoccured
recently. I'll just let it go as a fluke.

The cursor still gets divided in two sometimes when I +++ type a non-
printable character. Try it in off-line mode, connected directly to the
modem and not to a remote system, and hit esc or some control sequence.

Does anyone have a copy of Kermit that'll run under DOS 3.3 on an Apple II+?
Once someone tried to send me one, but part of it was lost in transmission
somewhere.
