[comp.sys.apple2] RamFAST problems continue...

kadickey@phoenix.Princeton.EDU (Kent Andrew Dickey) (12/31/90)

I must be the only person in the world still having problems with a
RamFAST SCSI controller card...

I have an Apple //gs.

Anyways, my previous problem was that AppleTalk and the RamFAST didn't
get along at all (crash into the monitor when booting GS/OS). So CVTech
sent me some ROM upgrades (free) so I'm now at version 1.11 and 1.12 of
the ROMs (I forget whether U15 or U16 is the 1.12, but I don't think it
matters that much). AppleTalk works great now.

However, 2 other strange results are perplexing me. First, Xenocide
will not run *IF THE RAMFAST CARD IS EVEN PLUGGED INTO THE SYSTEM*. As
long as the control panel setting for the slot it's in is set to YOUR
CARD, Xenocide hangs at the point where it clears the screen, and goes into
text mode with a yellow cursor at the top left corner of the display.
It doesn't matter whether I boot from the RamFast or not--it's mere
PRESENCE causes Xenocide to hang at that point. I've tried the RamFast
in slots 1,2, and 6. Booting it and not booting it. With DMA enabled
and disabled.

Anyways, that's not the biggest problem--Appleworks GS also hangs in the
Spreadsheet module. As soon as I try to enter a value into a cell, it
hangs permanently too. The cursor still moves, but the computer is out
to lunch.

In both cases, the machine does NOT crash into the monitor--it just
hangs there forever.

All of my other software appears to work--even the rest of AppleWorks GS
works just fine! It's a very bizarre problem.

My machine is a ROM 01 with a RamKeeper with a GS-RAM rev D. on the
front (just 256K), and a 1-meg Apple Card on the back. Therefore, I
ordinarily run the RamFast with DMA off. However, both of the above
problems occur with JUST the Apple Card in the mem expansion slot, and
with or without DMA.

If someone with a RamFast with either Xenocide or AppleWorks GS could
try running either program on their computer, I'd appreciate it if you
could let me know if it works for you.
