NEWS RELEASE:

MORGAN DAVIS GROUP ANNOUNCES MODEMWORKS 2.1

SAN DIEGO, CA, JANUARY 1, 1991 -- Today, the Morgan Davis Group
officially released ModemWorks(tm) version 2.1, a toolbox for Applesoft
BASIC developers. ModemWorks is a comprehensive set of command
extensions to BASIC providing communications management for all
popular modems and interfaces. Version 2.1 brings improved modem,
terminal, and protocol transfer performance. It comes with a
much-improved AmperWorks 2.3, a set of extensions to Applesoft, and a
completely revised user manual.

ModemWorks 2.1

The ModemWorks language, accessed through the ampersand feature of
Applesoft, consists of 47 English-like commands, such as &HANGUP,
&WHEN NOT ON LINE GOTO, and &WAIT FOR CARRIER. Every facet of
communications from terminal emulation to transfer protocols is
included in order to create custom electronic bulletin board systems
and terminal programs.

Version 2.1 includes a new set of interchangeable modem drivers,
optimized for improved throughput and reliability with a vast array of
internal and external Hayes(tm) compatible modems. It also includes an
updated timing system to ensure accurate file transfers.

New Timing Standard

The Morgan Davis Group continues to support the Apple II+ by
innovating a single-wire modification to provide standard software
timing. Unlike newer Apple II systems such as the IIe and IIGS, the
Apple II+ does not include a readily accessible 60Hz timing signal by
which software can synchronize time-critical operations.

In the past, software developers assumed Apple IIs would always run at
the original pace of 1MHz. Now that 8 MHz CPU replacements are
commonplace, this presented a challenge to software developers. The
modification, as easy to install as the venerable shift-key
modification, provides developers with an accurate timing source for
the Apple II+. ModemWorks(tm) is the first product to use this new
innovation successfully. This makes inexpensive Apple II+ computers
excellent high-speed communications systems, rivalling pricey
alternatives.

AmperWorks 2.3

ModemWorks comes with its companion utility, AmperWorks: 34 extended
BASIC commands that enhance the functionality of Applesoft. Using
AmperWorks, standard Applesoft programs can run faster, use less
memory, and perform functions that would otherwise be impossible
without it.

AmperWorks 2.3 adds seven new commands since previous versions. The
new commands are: &ERASE, erases an array from memory; &MLI, performs
ProDOS Machine Language Interface commands; &RESTORE GOTO, sets the
line of the next DATA statement; &SWAP, swaps the values of two
variables; &HLIN / &VLIN, draws horizontal and vertical lines by
repeatedly printing a character; &FILES, reads file names from a
directory into a string array with additional support for invisible
file filtering.

Software Updates

Registered users of earlier versions of ModemWorks can update to 2.1
for $20. The update includes AmperWorks 2.3, a completely revised
laptop (smaller 6" inch 9") manual, and programmer's diskette.
ModemWorks is available directly from the Morgan Davis Group and Apple
software distributors.
