:A friend of mine piked up system disk 5.04 from Sun computers yesterday. Since :we had gotten a bogus system disk & tools, 5.04, before he checked it out a :little more closely this time. He found everything to be the same as 5.03. :even though the disk had the APPLE label on it marked 5.04. The things that he :checked were the system number and date. The files that are listed when you :hold the space bar down upon booting and every system file size, creation :date, and modified date. All showed to be identical to 5.03. Has anybody else :done any comparison and if so can you post your results please?? Thank you in :advance. UUCP: crash!pro-grouch!jamesp ARPA: crash!pro-grouch!jamesp@nosc.mil

The system 5.0.4 is locate on apple.com under pub/dts/aii/sys-soft and it also includes two text files that tell the differences between 5.0.4, 5.0.3, and 5.0.2. The only thing I don't understand is why is the sys software is packed in hqx format? I don't know of anything on the GS that can handle it. So, I downloaded it on a Mac and unpacked it. It resulted in a file packed in sit format. The file was a dImg. I converted this file to the GS, and used Shrinkit GS to unpack the sit file. Well, it just produced a file that was unusable. The bottom line is, does anyone know how to get that sys disk from apple.com to unpack to a GS usable disk ??? Please help! Platkus mail suggestions to platkus. or post then here

The guy that posted it just did it this way to get it online ASAP.. I think that's a reasonable reason why... > The bottom line is, does anyone know how to get that sys disk >from apple.com to unpack to a GS usable disk ??? This has all been explained too... You can get mcvert to convert it from .hqx on UNIX... works like a charm.. Then un-StuffIt the file with ShrinkIT GS. Then un-dImg it with the special program written for this purpose (but might be useful in the future) by one of the regulars on here.. Todd P Whisell?! Jawaid?! Just a quick note to say that the files on Apple.com can be processed on the Macintosh to yield II GS disks without using the II GS at all. (I do not have a hard disk on my II GS which makes it impractical to create the files on it. :-() You can use Stuffit 1.5.1 to convert the .hqx file into a .sit file, and then use it to unpack the .sit into the dlmg file. (sorry about mixing identifications.) The dlmg file can be copied to a disk using (on a Macintosh) using the DiskCopy (I used version 4.1). The entire process is quite slick. Note that DiskCopy is available from Apple.com (I believe it is in the DTS Macintosh system software area). You will need Stuffit 1.5.1 to convert and unpack DiskCopy. One reason I am posting this information is not all of us use Unix systems to perform their FTP copies. I generally do all the FTP copies directly from my Macintosh as the transfer rates are superier. To all those for whom this information was a waste of time I apologize. Skip -- | F. H.
