[comp.sys.apple2] Xenocide

>>>>>>>>>>>>>
shooting my way through a level of threats, I'm often breathless. (By the
way, the extensive copy protection was a nuisance. I finally got my copy
cracked and installed on my hard disk. This work shouldn't have been
necessary!)
<<<<<<<<<<<<<

I purchased Xenocide through Programs Plus (where I get all of my software,
there are only 3 million people in Toronto, so there is only one store that
sells Apple II software in the city). It was not copy protected and I have
been running it quite happily from my hard drive since I got it. By the way,
it is ROM03 compatible, many of the best games are not (and some, like Silent
Service, never will be :(.

Well worth the 30 bucks.

I have a patch for Xenocide which NOP's out the 'decrement number of men'
routine, effectively giving you unlimited lives. I applied this patch
yesterday and went to try it out (it's on my hard drive). It got to the point
right before it asks for the original disk when the system hung. I tried
booting off the original floppy, and that would not work either! BTW, the
patch was only applied to the HD copy of the game. I finally isolated the
problem: it turns out Xenocide is somehow incompatible with the RAMFast in
slot 7. Has anyone else had this problem? I used to have a non-DMA SCSI card
and Xenocide ran perfectly from the HD. The only other thing I added since
then is a Chinook 4-meg memory card (but that's not the cause of the problem).
Help, anyone?

Da copy protection. Call MicroRevelations, they
have a version which is *NOT* copy protected. BTW,
ask them about the IBM vga version which is shipping
in a few weeks...suprise... :)

I have my RamFAST in slot 1 (I use AppleTalk slot 7 for printing)
Since I had heard several reports of Xenocide hanging on RamFAST
systems I got scared and tried it last night. It works fine. I had
no problem, (other than being a little rusty at the game...).

Two further notes:

To those who still have the key disk copy protected version, the
current version of Xenocide IS NOT COPY PROTECTED. Call the publisher
for update information.

For RamFAST owners, I talked to CV TECH earlier this week. Andrew
said that the new version 2 ROMs are in late beta. (actually he said
he thought they were done, but he sent them out to 8-10 select users
to let them pound on them before the general release.) He assured me
that all registered owners will receive a postcard informing them of
the availability of the new ROMS when the time comes. The new ROM
upgrade WILL NOT BE FREE. The upgrade will add features (Better
Removable drive support, Tape Cartridge support...) and will cost
somewhere near $15. I expect the postcard to arrive by Mid February,
I hope it is sooner, but things like this take time...

I try putting the RAMFast in slot 1 instead and then running Xenocide. I
don't the game will work with the card in slot 6 either... and I need my
printer to be in the serial port, so I can't take up slot 1 permanently with
the SCSI card.

Will there be any significant benefits for hard drive-only systems? I
have a 100-meg Quantum hooked up to the RAMFast, and that is all. I don't
need extra support for removeables or tape backup drives. I also heard that
2.0 will allow up to 12 partitions (I only need 4). Are there any other
improvements (faster speed? write-through caching?)

Also, about the CV Tech RamFAST upgrade, I heard that you will be required to
SEND BACK the OLD ROMS. <shrug> I do hope we don't have to... what a bother!

But the =tape drive= support (as opposed to removable cartridge drives like
Syquest) is interesting... is that tape drive as in tape drive backups?
