Well folks, it has happened, and I am still in shock. In todays Miami Herald (thurs 1/10/91) there is a full page ad in the food section announcing the 1991 supermarket tape / computers for schools program sponsored in this area by Publix supermarkets. Right below the big red letters that say Your school can get free Apple computers is a large picture of an Apple ][ GS, monitor, 2 disk drives and mouse.. And nowhere on the page is there any mention of a computer model that begins with a M. Anyone else seeing such an ad in other areas with a GS in it?? -- bsherman@mthvax.cs.miami.edu | bsherman@pro-exchange | MCI MAIL:BSHERMAN

Wow! >Anyone else seeing such an ad in other areas with a GS in it?? Actually, care for an even BIGGER shock? On a BILLBOARD no less, ya know, those huge monolithic signs by roads, I saw an ad and it had a picture of about the same equipment, and no Mac picture. I *believe* it had to do with the supermarket receipt / computer plan also. Of course this sign is in West Lafayette (not your major metropolis by any stretch of the imagination) and it was a pretty bland, uncolorful, and didn't really attract the eye, I think it was put up by one of the local supermarkets in relation to that deal, and it didn't say IIgs, but hey it WAS there! I should go see if it still is! Maybe I could 'appropriate' it hehehe. -k

That sounds like a promotion Miracle Food Mart in Toronto is running now. Unfortunately, they are giving away Amiga 500's to schools instead of the GS. I didn't read the fine print, so I don't know who else is sponsoring this endeavour. It would nice if they gave away GS's instead, of course... \/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/ | Brian T. We also have a store that is providing Apple IIGSes to the local schools for collecting cash register receipts. Piggly Wiggly grocery stores in Minot, North Dakota has been providing local grade schools with an Apple IIGS for each $100,000 worth of receipts turned in for the last two school years. This year (just recently) they up'd the requirement to $150,000 worth of receipts because of the cost of the systems. Thus far, over 200 systems have been provided to the schools since the project started. As for the ads, locally they have been showing drawings/pictures of the IIGS. The systems being provided consist of the CPU, color monitor, one 3.5" disk drive, and one 5.25" disk drive. Some software is also included. According to a recent article in the local paper, the cost totals $1,500 ($1,200 for hardware, and $300 for software). It is great that the company is doing this. In the beginning, I was teaching my kids (ages 7 and 10) on the IIGS at home. But more recently my kids have been teaching me! Mark Skapik 57ADSCXC<at>SACEMNET.AF.MIL Minot, ND
