[comp.sys.apple2] System Disk on /ram5

unknown@ucscb.UCSC.EDU (The Unknown User) (07/09/90)

Someone asked this a while ago but got no reply that specifically
answered his problem.

	I have the same problem.

If I try to disk copy [with DigiCopy GS], INSTALL, or file copy [with
the Finder] the SYSTEM DISK to /ram5 and then set the boot disk to the RAMDISK,
and try to boot, it will give an error $0028 and it's something like
unable to read boot volume name.

Could someone PLEASE tell us why this is happening and how to fix it?
It is MIGHTY useful to be able to boot from RAM..

This has been true since System Disk 5.. I think that's when it
started.. Same happens with 5.02..

HI! Hopefully soon in the future, we'll see great GS specific
programs and/or games from you?! (yes, I'm gonna be doing my part too..
I'm starting to learn the ToolBox)

great to have a big selection (especially when it comes to games)

Not a startup device?! Weird, when I have problems with that, I usually
get/got a $0028, error reading name from boot device or something that
makes NO SENSE.. Hey, I've got 5.04!! I should try it!!

But don't INSTALL it.. Just use DiskCopy GS or some other quick
diskcopy program to copy the whole DISK straight to /ram5.. will mean you
won't have to boot ORIGINALLY from a floppy (or hard drive).. But as I said
above, I used to get that error... It worked for a while, and maybe it
was something fixed in 5.04! (hopefully)

You say when you try booting from it... You do mean set the Control
Panel selection in the STARTUP DEVICE to RAMDISK, right?? (I know, this is
a very stupid question on my part)... It seems you -might- use something
like ProSel's utilities to "Boot slot 5" with no disk in and thinking it'd
go to the ramdisk or something... Sometimes dumb questions help elicit the
problem... (Is that a good rationalization for asking a dumb question??? heh)

But if you use DigiCopy GS, that copies the boot code off of the
disk to /ram5..

	Still doesn't work (sometimes)..

I've also tried the format then INSTALL method, and it doesn't
work..I haven't tried it with 5.04, but up until 5.02, it would give an
Unable to read boot name $0028 (the string might not be correct but
the # definitly is) error.

	So, no dice..

Alas, compiler technology on the GS is so bad that anyone writing games in
C stays away from the GS. This is one case where writing in C *reduces*
the quantity available for the machine.

Quantity and quality can be achieved in assembly language by having
*several* people write their games (slowly) in assembly all at once.
C just doesn't cut it on the GS for high performance applications (like
most games and graphic applications).
