[comp.sys.apple2] RamFAST/SCSI problems?

max@max386.eng.hou.compaq.com (Max Heffler) (01/12/91)

I placed an order this morning for a RamFAST/SCSI board through Quality
Computers and told me about a rumour of hard disks getting trashed that
was floating around Genie/Compuserve. Not having access to Genie and/or
Compuserve, I don't remember reading anything about this on Usenet.
Has anybody here these problems and/or have you seen any of these rumours
on Genie/Compuserver/AOL? Quality is holding up the order until they test
with new firmware. Does anybody know what is the environment from the
problem systems?
Thanx in advance...

Max, I myself have a RamFAST SCSI card for my ROM 03 GS, and I have had NO
problems. The rumor about trashed hard disks MAY be about the recent
beta-testing of ROM 2.0, an upgrade for the RamFAST currently in the works
which will allow support for removable media.

Max,

I think the RamFast has problems with CDC WrenRunner drives. They are
HUGE expensive drives not often found on Apple II's but some people
will try anything. By the book, they should work, but CV Tech
suspects that there is some quirk in the CDC Wren's that keeps them
from doing so. Since they are very expensive drives, and very few
people would use them on the Apple II. CV Tech told me they don't
want to buy one just to find out. They told me that they would,
however, be glad to pay shipping and handling both ways if someone
could send them a sample drive to test with their card for a few days.

I have had a RamFAST running with a seagate SCSI drive for a month or
so now and I cannot complain at all. Boy is that sucker FAST! You
might be able to buy one through TMS (CMS) peripherals. They
advertise in the back of A+ Incider and have pretty good pricing.

Ramfast troubes with the CDC WrenRunner?????

Hmm, I haven't heard of a WrenRunner before (but then again I'm not one to
browse hardware catalogs...well not weekdays). I've a CDC Wren III. The only
two SCSI boards that can see it are the OKS MultiKache and the RamFast. This is
probably just peculiar to my Wren, though, since I've heard of one person with
a Wren IV on a GS (not sure which SCSI board, though).
