[comp.sys.apple2] Strangeness with my printer

maye_ltd@uhura.cc.rochester.edu (Robert Mayer) (01/23/91)

Ok, here's the deal. I've got an extended carriage imagewriter.
Remember those fun 14" carriage imagewriter 1's that were around and about
when the //e was released? Well I bought one with my //e. A while ago I got
a ROM 3...I've been running it with a SSC but there are quite a few programs
that absolutely refuse to let me use the SSC to print and insist that I use
the printer port...

Here's the strangeness. I tried to use a normal 8 pin DIN to 25 pin RS232C
cable (read apple's printer cable) It has all together the wrong pin outs...
I have the pin configurations but the terminology confuses me and some help
would really be appreciated. Here's the stats...

Serial Port Printer input
---------------------- ------------------------
1 DTR 1 Frame Ground
2 Handshake In 2 Send Data +
3 Transmit Data - 3 Recieve data -
4 Ground Reference & Supply 4 Request to send +
5 Recieve Data - 7 Signal Ground
6 Transmit Data + 14 Fault +
7 General Purpose Input 20 DTR +
8 Recieve Data +

Obviously the ouputs run to the inputs but I get lost in the lingo and also
the fact that the printer input only lists 7 different pins but actually has
pin outs for pins 1, 2, 3, 11 - 16, 23, 24, 25. It's not a normal cable.

So this is from the manual... Then I actually look at the cable...

The cable actually has pin outs for 1-8, 12, 13, 19, 20, and 23

Has somone gone through this before???? I asked my local dealer and he just
looked at me funny, thought I really expected no more. I went in asking about
GS/OS 5.0.3 a month ago and he said, and I QUOTE: "A two gs??? I think we have
one of those in storage in the back."

Can someone either tell me the correct pin in / out stats so I can make my own
or tell me where I might be able to get a cable for the flippy thing.

please... If you can't help me at all would at least call Cupertino and screm
at them in my behalf.
