[comp.sys.apple2] PCT

I own the PC Transporter, and am relatively happy with it (as I don't do
anything but what my classes at FAU REQUIRE!

The manual is quite right about the drive. I formatted a disk at hom on
(that messed up--at least locally) at home on the PCT. When I attempted to
access the disks at school on the PS/2s, an error resulted (seek error I
think?) Oh well...I'm just careful to use IBM formatted disks when
transfer is important.

Which is quite true. But it appears to be impossible to predict whether an
individual IBM (or compatible) machine will be able to read a disk formatted
on the PCT. Even using IBM's own PC-DOS, 3.3, I have found that some IBM
machines will and others will not read a PCT disk. Fortunately, the
Model 70 I have access to at the college does read the disks I write to
at home with the PCT. On the other hand, at another office, no machine,
including one IBM, can reliably read these disks. Some of them will
read some files on such a disk, others will not read any files on the
disk. Sometimes, a file copied from the PCT disk to the IBM compatible,
while it is copied, is incomplete.

The moral of the story - if it works (as mine does), you are lucky, but
as a general rule, Eric is correct; don't bet on it!

P.S. For PCT users, if you are not familiar with the treasure trove (I mean
thousands) of pd/shareware msdos files available from Simtel20, drop me a
line; I will gladly supply the info.

I *had* a PCT, but I got sick of the lousy CGA graphics it had.
I have a //gs, and the least they could have done was use something like
the Tandy 16-color version of CGA. I mean, sheesh. It did work like
a charm while I had it, though. If they (AE) implement an AT Transporter
with at least EGA color, I'd be glad to go out and get one. But the
current PCT is so minimal as to be well-nigh useless to me, since the
PC-specific programs I'd like to use (ie Ultima VI, SigmaPlot, etc) are
silly on VGA.
