Having used TeX more than once I'll have to admit that it can produce a very professional looking document. I feel the real advantage comes from the standard document setups in Latex Bibtex etc. Once some one takes the time to set up the format an individual can easily create a document that conforms to a particular publication's wishes. If you've ever had to submit papers to the many journals around you will know that each has it's own preferances. The printing end does require some sort of high quality printer though to make use of kerning and all the other formating capabilities of TeX. At least a HP Paintjet and preferably a Laser Printer. This of course could be handled on an other computer such as the VAXes I use as long as the GS can produce a standard DVI file. On the other hand I have seen dvi files run to epson printers from an IBM and while of rater poor quality it wasn't that bad.
