[comp.sys.apple2] Here's a stupid question everyone can answer

Speaking of which, despite all the time I've spent on USENET and the
amount of time I've had my //GS, I've never actually had to use XMODEM
protocol or whatever.

I've finally discovered .apple2 and I've been wanting to download a bunch
of stuff, but FOR THE LIFE OF ME I CAN'T GET THE UNIX xmodem programs
to talk to either ZLink (which I just downloaded today) or Mousetalk.

I have a quick-and-dirty unix script to cat me chunks of the Binscii'd
files and its works, but I'd really like to use XMODEM or KERMIT or
something. Do you know how long it takes to do this stuff with a
capture buffer 400 lines at a time? Do you?

All I want is to make that protocol stuff work. I figure I'm just doing
something plainly stupid and silly. So email me.

Anyway, PLEASE help me, someone, anyone.

Peace.

You need to be going at N-8-1 for X-modem to work, but Kermit can work at
E-7-1. So if you can only go at E-7-1, then Kermit would be your best bet.

... which of course everyone did. I'd thank all of you individually, but
it would take days. So you know who you are: Thank you very much.

I think I know what the problem is, so I'll try to fix it and I'll let you
know what happens (maybe this should be added to FAQ?).

Now, if only someone could recommend a good, cheap hardrive of the //gs
and a nice development platform....

Peace.

Well, probably the best kind of cheap hard drive that you'll find is one that you
"roll your own"... In other words, shop around for a case and power supply (I got
one that had three 1/2 height bays and a real good power supply for about $80 --
an exceptional price at that, but there were maybe 10 left at the time and out of
production), get yourself a SCSI card (if you're at a university with one o' those
Apple (read as: Mac) discounts, try to haggle your local rep down from the $129 that
Apple (Mac) lists it for), cables, and a bare SCSI hard drive (I got an 80 meg
5.25" 1/2 height for about $380)

I, myself, wouldn't go for just the "cheap" HD, quality pays a big
factor in how you should route your purchase. I find Jasmine drives to be
reliable, and cost effective, especially when coupled with an Apple HSS card.
Of course, if that's not fast enough you can use a RamFast.
