[comp.sys.apple2] FTA Xmas Demo

erast1@unix.cis.pitt.edu (Evan R Aussenberg) (02/15/91)

I seemed to have missed the posting of the easter-egg
'passwords' for the Xmas demo. Could someone drop
me a note as to what they were. Thanks.

I've tried to download FTA's christmas demo twice, from two different
sources (comp.binaries.apple2 and tybalt.caltech.edu). In both cases
the resulting ShrinkIt file (and it was a ShrinkIt file, the Finder said
so!!) would not uncompress - GSHK said it could not unshrink the file.
WHY? Anyone else had this problem or know of a fix? Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I U/L the demo. Before U/L, I reassembled the pieces, and
arn the disk, so the parts are OK. The moderator requested a repost,
I believe he said that part 16 had been U/L twice, so I re-posted
part 17.

Exactly what error are you getting? CRC errors could indicate
a corrupted file.

Is the file in question on tybalt? If so, let me enlighten you:

files that end in .SHK are binary images of shrinkit archives
(that means the data in them is exactly the same as what's on the disk
when you create a shrinkit archive). when you FTP them you MUST type 'bin'
to set binary/image transfer mode, or else the file's data will be altered
on it way to you and that corrupts the archive. the same problem can occur
when you download the file to your computer -- kermit will only do binary
transfers if BOTH the local and remote kermits have been instructed to use
binary transfer (this is one thing about kermit that annoys me).

once you have the file on your own system, shrinkit may not recognize
it, although it should -- always try hitting 'see all files' before you give
up on a file.
