Question: I know Appleworks can save files in Text format, but can it retrieve text files, too? Thanks. Scott

Not sure about earlier versions though. APW 2.x can both retrieve and save text files. It is possible to set a printer to save text files as either "formatted" or "unformatted". Unfortunately, APW 2.x imposes its own formatting on files which you bring to the desktop i.e. the margin settings, and it is necessary to re-adjust them. In addition, (and I don't know about APW 3.0), APW 2.x exchanges # for any and all control characters in the file, with the exception of the carriage return. That is why it is necessary to run prospective imports through some kind of filter program to change LF's to CR's. I wish there was some way to permenantly change the default margins in APW 2.x to 0's all around. This would greatly decrease the likelyhood that a given file will be "too large" for the desktop when you import it. I have had that problem several times even though I have more than a meg of space on my desktop. Unfortunately, APW doesn't allow me to devote the entire meg to a single file. Just as a little footnote, I am reluctant to "step up" to APW 3.0 because I have a rather extensive collection of TimeOut add-ons that provide essentially everything that 3.0 offers without the apparent printing restricxtions that APW 3.0 has. I was told that it only supported ImageWriters. Is there any truth to that rumor?

Definitely not, I still use my old Gemini 10X with AW 3.0 (I would suggest that you use AW instead APW to refer to AppleWorks - many of us programmers relate APW with the Apple Programmers' Workshop). In fact, there are several printing enhancements, such as the ability to define 6 custom codes that you can use for whatever you want. For example, I use on of them to turn on the French character set for printing my friend's French essays that she sometimes does on my computer. Mike Hackett

In-Reply-To: message from bill@braille.uwo.ca TimeOut add-ons can be updated to work w/AWK 3.0 for FREE by Beagle Buddies at Applepple User Groups. It also may add line breaks at the end of the page. When you read it back in to AW, it will not be identical to the file that you started with. I assume that the newer versions of AW "retrieve" text files in the same way. This is different from saving a file with markups indicating formatting and then retrieving it. Appleworks 3.0 can handle any printer you care to name. There are a number of printer types defined in the setup menu, or you can define your own. There is a serious bug in AW3.0 though. If you remove the default printer from the list of defined printers, the program will bomb. This one of a number of known serious bugs to Appleworks 3.0. There are a couple of solutions to the problem though. First, there is a Freeware patch from Beagle Bros. that will fix those bugs. I'm not sure if the patch is available via FTP, but it is available on Genie, and on a local BBS here in Toronto. There is also the Appleworks 3.0 Companion from Beagle Bros. This program fixes all the known bugs in AW3.0, and also allows you to customize a number of the menus and prompts within Appleworks. I purchased my copy of Appleworks 3.0 Companion through A2-Central for $39.95. It should be available through any dealer that handles Beagle products. As for Appleworks reading text files, EVERY version of Appleworks I have used, including Appleworks 1.0 has had that capability. It's under the create a new file for the word processor. Simply select 'from a text (ascii) file' and give Appleworks the pathname. There are some things to watch out for if you are moving files from AW 3.0 to 2.X. Appleworks 3.0 creates files that are compatible with earlier versions of Appleworks until you use one of the new features. Once you have used a new feature in an Appleworks 3.0 file, that file is no longer compatible with earlier versions of Appleworks, even if you later delete the feature you used! (be real careful of the tab key if compatibility is important!) <o_o> _________________________ ________________________________________ / \ / \ | Kelly Gray | The opinions expressed in the preceding | | | message are not guaranteed to represent | | GRAY@ADMIN.HumberC.ON.CA | any form of rational thought whatsoever | \_________________________/ \_________________________________________/

This ain't true if you're using the Patcher that I wrote. It fixes the ImageWriter delete bug along with some 8 other known problems with AppleWorks 3.0. btw.. the AW 3.0 Companion also has these patches (plus about 70 other patches for your AW 3.0 -- including setting defaults in the WP).
