According to the README file and as attested by me, simply leave off the Z from the filename and the file is decompressed before being sent. I guess this is a new feature, as it doesn't work at other sites with *.Z files that I've tried to transfer. So I repeat, this only works at wuarchive.wustl.edu to my knowledge.
